Last test I did was the HM ref encoder which was slightly better than x264 but extremely slow so I only tested on a short clip.
I tested DivxHEVC on a much longer clip and it was higher quality on some frames, lower quality on others, usually ones with a lot of action, on average it was worse than x264. I haven't tried x265 yet, is it any better?

Thread: Divx or x265?
since x265 is steadily changing, you will have to try yourself,... a few days ago x265 did offer better quality than DivX265.
Side note: what does the vertical scale meassure?
Vertical scale is SSIM.
I did try x265 but I couldn't get it to decode my input properly so it encodes a shape-shifting mess. At first I thought it was an OUTPUT decoding problem but then I realized the bitrates were unacceptably high for such a tiny resolution and such a high CRF.
It also sucks I can't encode lower than 320x240 resolution.
