Is there an industry standard which is used for testing compression quality - something similar to what the tests bars are to analogue TVs?

There isn't a common trustworthy measurement of quality, so an industry standard to test for something like visual quality is kind of problematic.
There are a bunch of short test sources people like to use for codec evaluations like: http://media.xiph.org/video/derf/
The "bird" sample from Planet Earth is often used as a such a stress test.
Anything with lots of film grain is also very difficult. Especially in dark areas.
