Thanks for the info. Below are the (IMHO) pertinent comments from three regular "doom9ers":

I'm guessing it must be using Wavefront Parallel Processing? Speed wise it's similar to Strongene encoder, and uses 90% of the CPU (4 cores), with rather small fluctuations. Quality - don't know I'm waiting for output...

    Edit:
Quality is ok but I don't have time now to do serious x264 or Strongene HEVC comparison.
But the funny thing is that DivX player apparently needs over 800MB RAM for 720p playback... Memory leak? Bad optimization? Large decoder buffer? Might be the last one because CPU usage fluctuates between 0-10% (on 4 core i5 @4GHz).

There's definitely scene detection, though the detection is a bit too enthusiastic on the Crew clip. Keyints are at 5 secs, and the frame cadence resembles IBBBP (w/ fewer Bs when necessary). They also seem to have limited CTU size to 32x32, but that maybe that's automatic based on source resolution. At lower bitrates, the image sometimes has distinct block edges, which suggest they tweaked the loop filters.

Encoding speed is roughly half that of x264-veryslow. I wasn't impressed at all by visual quality, but I'll try testing the encoder with more clips some time later.

it is supposed to encode audio also.
I tried couple of short clips at 720p. The audio is there in the converted clips as VLC plays the audio. The DivX player plays the video but not the audio, with some message about no compatible audio codec!

I reinstalled DivX 10 and it encoded a 720p video and although it encoded much faster than the x265.exe encoder, the file was unplayable. The DivX player plays the first frame for a few seconds, the last frame for a fraction of a second, the first frame for a few seconds, the last frame for a fraction of a second and so on until the end of the video. The encoded video will not play in graphstudio or any other player and will not open in Virtualdub.

I'll try completely uninstalling it and cleaning the registry and then reinstalling it

EDIT: Seems the problem was with the source which was an uncompressed AVI. I used an ac3 XviD as source and the encoder created a file that played fine. The only complaint was that the ac3 audio that was passed through had crackling sounds in the headphones that the original ac3 did not have and being a music video it was unacceptable. The video quality looked slightly better since the original had some grain and the Xvid was 788MB while the DivX HEVC MKV was only 123 MB.

To my surprise, the MKV opened in mkvmerge gui (I haven't been able to get mkvmerge to handle any HEVC files) and I was able to mux the ac3 file into the mkv. The audio still had the crackling sound though so I tried to play it in MPC-HC and although it threw out an error about the divx demuxer it played the audio without the crackling sound so it seems it is the divx player that is causing the crackling audio.

I don't know how long it took to encode the 7:30 video since I was watching football but it was a lot slower than the first encode.

@Marchand: as it stands now i would tend to agree but i think a lot has to do with the configuration of each encoder, Strongene says that the testing release currently available is tuned for quality over speed, to show case what their encoder is capable of. the divx offering on the other hand, i think, is more about wetting our appetites about the hevc sdk and the high dollar pro offerings that will soon be licensing the sdk.

i want to see what divx's offering with the settings maxed out can do.

  15. Using DivX HEVC Encoder

The DivX HEVC encoder [BETA] is a command line tool that is now capable of encoding HEVC content.

    Download the binaries here.

    Usage

    DivX H.265/HEVC Encoder

    Usage: DivX265 -i <infile> -o <outfile> -br <bitrate> -s <w>x<h> (for raw infile)
    or: DivX265 -i <infile> -o <outfile> -br <bitrate> (for .avs|.avi infile)
    or: DivX265 -h (for help)

    Example Usage

from a raw file (yuv/raw, assumes IYUV/I420 colorspace):
    • C:\DivX265.exe -i content_in.yuv -o content_out.hevc -br 3000 -s 1280x720
Piping from stdin through another command line tool:
    • C:\ffmpeg.exe -i content_in.avi -s 1280x720 -f rawvideo -pix_fmt yuv420p - | DivX265.exe -s 1280x720 -br 4000 -i - -o content_out_50frames.hevc
from an AVS file (make sure AVISynth is installed):
    • DivX265.exe -i content_in.avs - o content_out.hevc -br 3000/li>
    from an AVI file:
    • DivX265.exe -i content_in.avi - o content_out.hevc -br 3000/li>
    Options

    Notes

    • For more information on bitrate, keyframe intervals, etc., please refer to the DivX HEVC Video Profiles (DRAFT, May 2013).
    • The default colorspace for encode is assumed to be IYUV or I420
Tested and some did not work? See the image below:

I have no idea how you are getting the audio to play. I'm not the only one reporting no audio with HEVC encodes using this program.

The original clip plays the audio just fine in the DivX player.

Try installing CCP-Combined Community Codec Pack:

    http://did-a-fishtank-explode-in-your-pants.or-are-you-happy-to-see.me/Combined-Commun...2013-08-01.exe

I was using the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, and was having several problems with video and audio. I uninstalled everything and installed the CCP, and now, once set up, I have no problems with audio or video. I use Win7 64-bit Quad-Core

Thanks! Works great in Virtualdub 1.10.3 with the External Encoder feature.

    Video Encoder
    C:\Tools\DivX265.exe
    -i - -s %(width)x%(height) -br 4000 -o "%(tempvideofile)"
    %(outputname).hevc

    Multiplexer / video only
    C:\Tools\mkvtoolnix6.2.0-promised_land_rovi_v1.0.4\mkvmerge.exe
    -o "%(outputname)" --default-duration 0:%(fpsnum)/%(fpsden)fps "%(tempvideofile)"

    Multiplexer / video and audio

I take that back. DivX265.exe works fine but mkvtoolnix6.2.0-promised_land_rovi_v1.0.4 from http://labs.divx.com/node/127905 fails to mux either the video only or video and audio into a MKV file.

If I use an encoder set without the muxer to encode the video and audio files and then use mkvmerge to mux the files after they are encoded then I get a working file but if I include mkvmerge in the encoder set then the encoding fails and I'm left with no video, audio or working mkv file.

Looks like I'll still have to wait until Bunkis releases the next mkvtoolnix build with hevc support since the command line muxer does not support hevc.

Also, I had to put a copy of mmg from the regular 6.2.0 build in the 6.2.0 Rovi folder since the Rovi build did not come with a GUI.

OK! Got it working. Seems the muxer doesn't like part of the command that I normally use to mux mkv in Virtualdub's external encoder. Here is the command arguments that it likes...

    video and audio
    -q -o "%(outputname)" "%(tempvideofile)" "%(tempaudiofile)"

    no audio
    -q -o "%(outputname)" "%(tempvideofile)"

Crap!!! 30 minutes later on a three minute video and the audio is out of sync. Not sure why the Rovi build will not accept "--default-duration 0:%(fpsnum)/%(fpsden)fps" but it's sure messing me up.

  26. More a movie encoded in DivX Hybrid-Hevc (DivX265.exe), working perfectly in audio and video DivXPlayer 10, no crashes or failures. In this test, the progress bar Hybrid did not work and there was no information about the time lapse Missing encoder, but noted that the process was running smoothly behind the program. I am very happy with the Hybrid and more improvements to come for this encoder HEVC-H265-DivX.
    Thank Selur.

like mentioned in the change log Hybrid can only provide progress indication if ffmpeg is used as decoder since:
    a. the current DivX265 does not indicate any progress indication when fed through pipe
    b. mencoder can't be used since it output to std:ut which would cause problems for piping the output to DivX265
-> can't really do much about any of this unless either DivX265 or mencoder change

@selur, i don't use hybrid, nor do i use the divx265 encoder, but i thought i would try the divx265 just to see about the issue with the piping in my gui's. after coding various frontend gui's for different command line tools, i learned a few things, like, there are different piping situtations and how to retrieve the data from it using different methods.

so actualy, divx265 does give progress report through piping. you just have to wait for it. it spits it out every 79 frames. it may vary per encode or video or computer, or other. 79 frames is the interval on my desktop dual core pc.

below is a snipet of the piping output in one of my gui apps. you should be able to reconfigure your piping parser from the details below,
    duration; frame_no; of x, fps encode speed;

    Code:
      0:00:01 Frame 1 of 1092 encoded @ 0.58 fps
      0:00:02 Frame 2 of 1092 encoded @ 0.77 fps
      0:00:03 Frame 3 of 1092 encoded @ 0.89 fps
      0:00:04 Frame 4 of 1092 encoded @ 0.98 fps
      0:00:04 Frame 5 of 1092 encoded @ 1.03 fps
      0:00:05 Frame 6 of 1092 encoded @ 1.01 fps
      0:00:06 Frame 7 of 1092 encoded @ 1.05 fps
      0:00:07 Frame 8 of 1092 encoded @ 1.08 fps
      0:00:08 Frame 9 of 1092 encoded @ 1.10 fps
      0:00:09 Frame 10 of 1092 encoded @ 1.08 fps
      0:00:09 Frame 11 of 1092 encoded @ 1.10 fps
      0:00:10 Frame 12 of 1092 encoded @ 1.11 fps
      0:00:12 Frame 13 of 1092 encoded @ 1.08 fps
      0:00:13 Frame 14 of 1092 encoded @ 1.04 fps
      0:00:15 Frame 15 of 1092 encoded @ 0.97 fps
      0:00:16 Frame 16 of 1092 encoded @ 0.97 fps
      0:00:17 Frame 17 of 1092 encoded @ 0.96 fps
      0:00:18 Frame 18 of 1092 encoded @ 0.96 fps
      0:00:19 Frame 19 of 1092 encoded @ 0.97 fps
      0:00:20 Frame 20 of 1092 encoded @ 0.97 fps
hope this help you add that feature into your hybrid gui.
