  1. Hey all,

I have two MOV files that I need to edit with Magix Video Deluxe 2013 Plus. I cannot get them to open, though. I have tried VLC and Quicktime (both up to date). Quicktime, VLC, WMP and Magix do get audio, but no video.
So I googled and figured I dont have the apropriate codec for the files, but even GSpot cant tell me what they are. I get
"Rendering failed Following is the error reported by DirectShow. 0x80040265 [unknown]"
as an error message, for both files.
Handbrake as well as XMediaRecode can't handle the file. (Handbrake informs me I am lacking the right codec, XMediaRecode just kinda shuts down right after I try to recode.)

I know that the files themselves arent corupt. I tested them on the Mac that I copied them from onto my external HD. They played with Quicktime just fine, from the original location as well as from my HD. Also, I have never had any problems with missing codecs so far. Like, seriously, I have not have a video NOT playing in, like, forever. Quicktime and VLC are up-to-date. I am using a Windows computer, however, so my guess is that that's somehow the root of the problem - switching between Mac and Windows.

If anyone has any other ideas how to transform the videos into a format Magix can recognize or how to teach Magix how to deal with whatever current codec the files are in, I would be eternally grateful!

    Thanks in advance!!!

Use MediaInfo to get more information about the video. GSpot hasn't been updated in a while, and its support for video containers other than AVI and MPEG is rather limited. (On the OS X side, I recommend either VideoSpec or iMediaHUD to get information on a video file.)

It's possible the videos were created using a Mac-only codec.

    What next?

  4. GSpot is useless for MOV/MP4 files. Use MediaInfo instead. Oops, too late!

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Intermediate_Codec

The Apple Intermediate Codec is available only on the Mac OS X platform and cannot be read on other platforms to date such as Windows or Linux.

  5. Gnahhh.... rawwwwrrrrr.... MEH!!!

so what, no solution then? Could I recode it using the Mac that I got the files from?
Surely, there has to be some kind of workaround... there always is.... right?

Yes, try to re-encode it using that Mac.

(The Apple Intermediate Codec is, in fact, what I meant by "Mac-only codec." I just couldn't remember the name off the top of my head, this morning. )

  7. Alright, so it might not be so utterly hopeless afterall! Thanks, anyways, but I need to bother you again, as I my knowledge of Mac systems and software is very limited. What program would you suggest to recode from Mac? Also, should I recode into any specific format? I usually go with mpeg4, since the video is intended to be put on to a web site...

(btw, dont you all just love Apple for making everything so easy and compatible? *gnarrr*)

Quicktime, perhaps. Or maybe even iMovie.

I'm afraid I won't be of much help in that regard, since I don't do that much video work on my Mac. You might try asking this question in the Mac subforum here on VideoHelp.

Just don't use the Apple Intermediate Codec, and you should be fine, for the most part, in going between Windows and OS X.
