Yeah, I was wondering what was going on. When I first encoded with a 64 bit build on Windows 7 64 Ultimate, I was getting encode speeds as high as 51 fps on a 1280x720 encode. I thought it had to do with the 4096x2160 input files but I was still getting speeds that were almost twice as fast as the last few encodes I've made...

    El_Heggunte_x265-64-bit_0.8+248-6f7b323061dc............. / encoded 750 frames in 156.01s (4.81 fps), 355.70 kb/s / 1.29 MB 352 Kbps

Oh, you were talking about the missing frame. Yeah, I noticed that also.

i miss the consistant repository for x265.exe builds. the repos. helped to keep track of builds that works or failed. however, with the one'zee two'zees, by different people building them, there is no control of how i can track down which is which and what is working or failing that i can report accurately with. i am lost, because i am having trouble getting these latest builds working and getting confused and frustrated by the inclusion and exclusions going on and off with xp support. and all of this is making me depressed.

so, far, to report for today, i am unable to get these latest versions working on my netbook (atom cpu) and two dell core i3 and core i7 desktops (work pc) to work. the encode stops at frame 15, no file is created and the usual m$ backdoor dialog box to close down the app, pops up. however, the strange thing is, these same apps work on my desktop pc at home. all are running windows xp.

the ones i am having trouble with (work pc's and netbook) are the ones i downloaded from post # 1468 and post # 1470. they are not working in my gui, and as a last resort, a dos console window:

There may be many reasons for problems.

Even a bug in a CPU optimized assembler code which only fails on specific CPU families.

Missing a whole frame, though, is an issue I will try to check, comparing my 32 bit against my 64 bit builds...
    __

    Oh, wait ... why x264_64.exe ? Did you confuse avs4x264 with avs4x265?

afaikt, the version from the link below was designed for the (x265.exe by default, else when using -P switch, it will use what you spell out on the command line, which is the method i use in all cases since in my gui i have a pulldown box of all the x265 builds to test since i incorporate the build version into the filename) but you may be right about the x265 builds but in the avs4x265 app it could be something else ( never cought ?) and cropping up in this instance with respect to that line error in the output.

    http://kurtnoise.free.fr/x265/

also, the encoder fails when i use the old method, cmd /c as well. so, the failing part on the encoder relates to your first notes about cpu / assembler/etc.

just wanted to say, that this was an important point to make. and every tester, whether casual or serious, should come out and share their success or failures, especially on these latest updates. better yet, testers having more than one cpu type should test each of them with each new build so that a quicker resolution can be made. this should be a regular part of anyones test bed. team work. thank you.

i'm back home now, on my desktop pc ... and reporting back to confirm that the two latest builds mentioned, plus a few more are working fine on this pc:

grain retention and hevc playback codecs/decoders

looking for parameters to get started in "grain retention" encoding. searching around didn't help. i do not know what params control that aspect of the encoding but i want to play around with it if the param(s) are ready enough in these latest 0.9 builds.

also, i am not able to get video showing in my gui like i used to. must be some ds codec issue going on, change in compression method, or change elsewhere and these latest builds. are there any prefered (newer) codecs to d/l that i can get up and running ?

    thank you.

Next I'll lower --q to 17 to see if it makes a difference. When I was using bitrate, it didn't matter how high or how low I set it. It seemed to always give me the same low bitrate. I wonder also if I raise it to 28 (default) if the speeds will be increase.

I used the same 4096x2160 avi in Virtualdub to compare x264, DivX265, and all the listed x265 encoders (I also ran DivX265 through a batch file which ended up being faster than the Virtualdub file).

    @ DarrellS:

Please don't waste time with speed comparisons.

What is it good for? -- Absolutely nothing.

i would prefer to be informed when there is an increased encoding speed from a previous build, or when it drops down for some unknown reason.

And it looks like we had a speed decrease with the last build. I've also noticed that the older versions of GCC seem to build faster builds than newer ones.

I'm still waiting for x265 to offer the same encoding speeds as DivX265. Running Windows 7 has me running out of memory or close to it since it takes over 1 GB of memory just to run Windows 7. Windows XP seems a lot more efficient at 3.7 GB of memory than Windows 7 at 4 GB. This computer seems to run like a snail since I've installed Windows 7 and I've tried all the tricks I can find to try and make it faster but it hasn't helped. I'm assuming that I need as much memory as this board will allow to run Windows 7 and that is 8 GB of DDR2 PC8500.

It's hard to see this being a serious contender to x264 unless all you see is people using it to encode 1080p at lower file sizes for file sharing websites. Most of us are not going to have 100" (or bigger) TVs to watch our movies on so 1080p will be just fine for most of us.

Speed is still more important to most folks as long as the quality is acceptable. Studios will be the biggest users of x265. Videophiles who have to have the latest and greatest of everything and animators who usually need higher resolutions to look good. Try watching Elephant's Dream, Cars or Barnyard in 720p or lower.

There may be speed differences between different source revisions, as the code develops.

But I don't want my builds being compared with builds of the same revision compiled by other people. I do nothing to increase or decrease it, so I do not want to hear complaints that "LigH's builds are faster or slower than others".

Furthermore, preset "ultrafast" is the least useful for speed comparisons. The speed of reading the source video from the harddisk (if you use YUV/Y4M files) has the biggest influence when the encoder takes the least time.

The Ultrafast preset is the only preset you can use that will give you faster encodes than .1 or .01 fps. DivX265 will not encode 4K resolution at it's fastest preset but at it's faster preset and is still almost twice as fast as x265 at it's fastest preset.

I'll start averaging the x265 encodes and comparing the average with DivX265 and x264. I was going to do that this time I figured in ten months time that we would see a lot better increase in speed than we've seen. Seems like January or February that it reached it's peak

    And next: 1.0+4-d72770a77ff8

This patch introduced a make target "clean-generated". What is it good for? I hoped it would not need to compile each and every source again (what the purpose of a make utility should be), now that I don't need to delete all files like in "make clean". But no, it took the same time.
