    OK, that answered my question. My 12 MB "test.avi" file turned into 38 MB with Quality set to "same as source". I set it to "normal" and it went down to 16 MB and I couldn't see any difference in the on screen quality.

    My logic was flawed: I saw "same as source" and thought "if the source is compressed, the output will be as well" and for some dumb reason I didn't think of trying the other settings. Thanks for solving the mystery for me.
