I've ripped plenty of blu ray main movies to file structure using clown_bd, AnyDVD, and eac3to, but I can't seem to rip my copy of Aliens. The disc plays fine. I've tried using both clown and DVDFab, and in both instances, the rip aborts at exactly 50%. Also, the disc drive seems to be "hunting" when it hits that 50% mark. Here is the log from eac3to when I use the clown method:

Rip the entire thing to the hard drive using the built-in ripper within AnyDVD HD first. Then work on extracting the main movie only.

Ok, I tried that twice, but same problem. It aborts at 44%. There's gotta be a read error, but it plays fine in my standalone player and the disc does not appear to have any marks on it.

I also just ripped Alien 1 with no problems.

    Any other suggestions?

There may be a physical flaw in the disc that the error correction of the player can get around, but ripping and creating a perfect copy poses a problem. You can probably confirm this by running a Transfer Rate Test in OptiDrive Control with this disc. If you see a massive drop in read speed near that section of the movie, then you'll know.

Different drives have different reading abilities, but few people have more than one or two blu ray drives. If you know of anyone else with a drive you might try it with their machine.

You could also try ripping with MakeMKV in Backup Mode to try and get the entire thing to the hard drive, but I don't really think another software program is the answer.

  5. It's worth trying on another drive, if possible. Maybe you'll get lucky.

But I should think that a *new* pressed disc will either work on all drives or none. I've only ever gotten one defective new disc, and neither of my drives (Lite-on BD-ROM and LG BD-RW) could read it. And the disc glitched on a standalone as well, freezing, jumping forward the better part of a minute, then resuming.

I normally rip with my BD-ROM. The only times it failed to read a disc and the BD-RW did read successfully, the discs in question (two of them if memory serves) were ex-Blockbuster rentals I got when our store closed down.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!
