Windows 7 connects to internet in afe mode: and runs everything in a normal manner.
Windows 7 will not connect to the internet in :normal mode: although the indicator in the tray says it is.
Oddly enough windows update works just fine
We have googled, yahooed, etc and tried a myriad of suggestions including uninstalling IE10 and reinstalling IE10 but no luck. System restore doesn't go back far enough to be any help.
We hope someone out there can shed some light on this problem.

if you see error messages then there is something wrong with your DNS server. (Dead or incorrect IP)

Then you are on the internet.

The fact that you mentioned that Windows Update works also proves this.

You'll have to be specific about what exactly doesn't work, but internet connectivity is not your problem.

The reason I referred to this as an internet connectivity problem is because IE10, chrome, and email(incredimail) will not work. Every thing else works OK.

    Thanks aedipuss,

All the troubleshooting routines report nothing wrong.
Since our last communication we have done the following:
    reset winsock
uninstalled all protection like antivirus, firewall, antimalware
turned computer and router off-waited-turned back on
    uninstalled then reinstalled network adapter
why everything works perfectly in safe mode is still a mystery

Did you turn off windows built in firewall?Seem like an application that starts up in normal mode is blocking off some of your internet access.

Firefox is another internet browser,i use it as my main browser,it's not needed if you prefer ie but it would be a way of testing to see if firefox can access the net and a chance you might like it better.

You can set it up as a second drive to another machine and do a virus scan that way.

Just a quick tidbit ... You might also type 'IPconfig /all' from the cmd window and see what your main network port says and if you have nameserver, etc. Should look something like this:

This shows my address, 192.168.1.xx is a router and it is also my DHCP server and Gateway. If my connection acted as yours, I would also suspect this router/MOdem. If you also have a router, you can usually access it by its IPaddress and check or correct its settings. The display is different for different routers but the information is just in different locations.

If you have a router (many people do) you might check this also. Many time service providers can help diagnose.

  22. Another idea.
    Download autoruns program from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

    1) execute autoruns.exe
    2) in autoruns program click FILE -> RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR
    3) click on LOGON tab

    make a screenshot

    my example

Click start, type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd.exe, click Run as administrator, and then press Continue.

Type netsh winsock reset at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

I have had this problem before after the install of IE10 on a client pc.
Tried everything i could think off but no luck.

I used system restore to a restore point prior to the install of IE10 and it worked perfectly.

What exactly caused this problem is unknown to me, but transportfan maybe right about the host file been corrupted.
Windows checks the host file first and connect to the internet after.

  26. It would be nice to know what the eventual solution to this problem was.

Otherwise, we, all of us, just wasted our time for no reason whatsoever.

Personally, I keep track of the people who never bother to report back on what solved the problem. Cuts down on the list of people with issues I try to help.

    Hey Guys,
Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. The problem actually belonged to a neighbor. I contacted him last night and found out that he got so disgusted with the problem that he formatted his hard drive checked it for errors and installed windows 8. He is happy once again. After looking back over the responses to this thread I was very impressed with all the people that tried to help. Incidentally we tried them all but nothing worked. We have recorded all the responses in case this happens again. So we thank you and are sorry that the problem was never really resolved.
