I'm using Handbrake to shrink an MKV file
It's reporting that it's going to take 7 hours or something close to convert to MP4
(Using a Dual Core P2.5 Dell laptop)
    I've just left it running

Question: would it be quicker to convert to MKV or MP4?

    Thanks

    Is this h264?

Mkv and mp4 are just containers. They hold the video.

Are you going to 1080p video? It might be quicker to go to 720p video at a bit of a quality hit.

Also are you doing more than 1 pass? Are you adding filters to it to change the video?

    What is your source?

You see there is a lot that goes into deciding how long it takes to make a video file.

Also don't have anything running while you're doing it either - except for antivirus of course. You should have your system as free for just video as possible.

And you should be going from internal drive to internal drive or your destination should be on the same drive. If you are converting over to a usb or external drive that will add to the time too.

if you don't need to reduce the size then MkvToMp4 would probably be the fastest way to go.

demux MKV and remux to MP4, but without reducing the size

    thanks for the replies guys
the file would typically be 720p blu ray rip
    so h264
    that's all i know

the file size needs to be smaller so i can play on my android phone while running on a treadmill at the gym

i find it hard to get hold of a divx version - which i would do otherwise (but i still have to resize to ensure smooth playback - else it's jumpy)

    does that change anything?
    thanks

  6. then MkvtoMp4 is a good choice, set output video and audio as you like
