  1. Example of problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOteKk_RbuA

What makes the picture distorted like purple or large swarming pixels?

Tried every output module in VLC preferences, unchecking and checking rendering options. It works in SMPlayer. So what's with the VLC?

It may be a bug ... both vlc and smplayer/mplayer have bugs, though vlc seems to be worse.

What hardware? If it's a cpu/gpu horsepower problem smplayer is generally better because it just runs faster than vlc.

Sometimes these video files were encoded on a system with 3rd party codec packs, which are notoriously problematic. I don't use windows much anymore ... almost always ubuntu ... but in windows 7 I solved the problem by yanking all that crap. Then I stuck to media programs as much as possible that are linux ports. E.g. vlc and smplayer. Linux programs are better behaved that way.

Anyway, some of those crap codecs have compatibility issues and different players react in unpredictable ways.

BTW if you are having a problem with vlc or smplayer do not install 3rd party codec packs to try to fix it. They have their own codec libraries installed and it'd be a waste of time in addition to making windows less stable.

    GOM player is also adware/bundleware.

Just download the portable version of smplayer to avoid any opencandy.

Try uninstalling VLC then reinstalling, sometimes that helps. Also you can run the 32 bit version instead of the 64 bit version. 32 bit version for me at least is less buggy.
