I am looking at getting a solution to not needing to have my pc run constantly for streaming movies. Right now I use plex app via Roku to stream from my main pc with Plex media server.

I was thinking of getting myself a WD live tv hub or a Boxee Box if the old Roku would be able to go to another room in the house and access either of those devices for streaming the movies from the built in or external hard drive.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I don't think the WDTV Live hub or Boxee Box contain DLNA servers, only clients. You could get a NAS with a DLNA server built in. We have a ZyXEL NSA320 with two 3 TB drives. It consumes under 10 watts when idle, about 20 watts when active. It has a DLNA server but we don't use it. All our players support browsing and playing via SMB shares -- which I think the Roku lacks.

Oh, it was wrong about the WDTV Live Hub. It includes a DLNA server. The Roku should be able to access that. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=570

You can stream any file on the WD TV Live Hub media center to a WD TV Live media player or any DLNA/UPnP compatible TV, Blu-ray Disc™ player, or game console.
What we still don't know is if the Live Hub can transcode (probably not) if needed by the Roku. Most NAS won't transcode either. They have wimpy CPUs.
