Iphone to Windows 8 editing software

My wife has an Iphone 5 and wants to use it as a video recorder to replace an aging and finicky Sony Camcorder. She is looking for a software to use to edit the files that the Iphone creates. Can you suggest a good free program and/or not free that would work well and be simple enough to work with?

What kind of editing? For basic cutting /joining/reconversion can you use freemake video converter and mpeg streamclip just to cut without reconverting.

Native iphone video can be problematic for editing because of variable frame rate -- a semi-brilliant solution to variable lighting conditions and minimizing bandwidth when sharing.

Apps like filmic pro will force a constant frame rate.

If you're going beyond simply trimming, the "usual suspect" basic NLE's work fine. Sony Vegas Movie Studio, Premiere Elements. Vegas is often heavily discounted.
