Hello all,
I've been looking around for some information on the hardware that was used in the 70s, 80s, and 90s to alter video signals. the output i'm looking for is saturated and distorted with static and lines running through it at times. here are two examples:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RInXYYOPCLk&feature=youtu.be
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJER4kq0hfE
I'm interested in learning more about the theories behind this technology as well as purchasing kits/components to build my own, and i'd also like to know of some companies that made stuff like this so i can possibly find some hardware on ebay to test out.
surprisingly, this information has been tough to come by when searching google for "analog video filter/effects/distortion" etc, so I'm hoping that some of the knowledgeable people here will be able to point me in the right direction so i can begin to learn more about these now almost ancient technologies.
thanks!

I'm not aware of hardware devices to do what you have in mind, but there should be plenty of software filters and video processing programs to do most all of it. For freeware, you might try this MSU 'cartoonizer' filter for Virtualdub: http://compression.ru/video/cartoonizer/gallery_en.html
But we do have some members that work in the professional video industry and might be able to help you identify some hardware devices. I suspect they could have been part of a large video mixing board and may be a bit rare these days as most video processing is now digital with PCs involved.
And welcome to our forums. -
thanks, i'll take a look at the filter you recommended. virtualdub is a great tool. I'm hoping for some gear recommendations, but failing that i hope to get some recommendations on what to study and what to google for in order to get more information on this. my searches have been fruitless so far, i think i'm searching for the wrong keywords, but don't know the jargon and haven't been able to find what i need.
thanks for your suggestion!
