Is there a way to change settings to allow you to drag the video clip that you want to edit into the MPEG streamclip window, rather than having to go File > Open > find the video clip?
This way would be much quicker than going through a long path to find the file or having to drag it to the desktop.

MPEGStreamclip doesn't support 'drag n drop'. I guess you could ask the author to consider it for a future release, but as it is a free program .........
