I'm really enjoying using Xmedia Recode.
Does anyone know how the quality settings work.
If I choose Custom and then the Avi Format
Does the program choose the bit rate settings it thinks best or does it default to the last setting you used ?
I like to recode with the best quality I can from wmv to avi and some mkv's to avi.

What codec are you using? When I choose xvid it seems to be always 2000kbits and mpeg-4 1400kbits.
If you don't need an exact output file size you can try choose xvid and choose the constant quantizer encoding mode. See http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/295672-A-problem-for-video-experts?p=1811057&viewfu...=1#post1811057
hi, i have been using XMedia myself trying to compare to handbrake, and i noticed one thing with quality preset.
i am converting 1080/50p m2ts to 720/50p mp4 but it is still relevant.
with handbrake i can set a constant RF quality of 20 and i get 6Mbps average, if i use RF20 in XMedia my same file is 9Mbps, so i adjust the XMedia RF to 25 and i get almost the same 6Mbps result as handbrake.
i believe XMedia uses the ffmpeg x264 encoder where handbrake doesnt, meaning the constant RF settings will be different.
i now convert to 720/50p mp4 using RF18 in handbrake, and RF23 in XMedia.
im not sure what constant RF setting you would use for converting wmv to Avi, but what Avi are you outputting to, if i was you, try h264 in an mp4 container, it has excellent player support.
btw, what resolution, video bitrate, and audio has your WMV source files got ???
maybe grab a copy of MediaInfo and import your WMV file and post a screenshot of what you have so we can see the video file properties.
my guess would be to try constant quality RF23 or RF25 and see what you think after comparing them with the WMV files.
I have just done another couple of recodes and it seems to me that when using the AVi conversion option that Xmedia Recode rememrbs your last setting. Eg it was on bit rate 2,000, I changed it to 1500 and recoded a video. Then I did another video and it came up with a Brt rate setting of 1500.
