    I've got an .mp4 file that I'm trying to convert to .avi with subtitles. When trying to encode to .mpeg avi (mencoder) I get the following error:

    [h264 @ 0x878f8c]abs_diff_pic_num overflow
    [h264 @ 0x878f8c]decode_slice_header error
    [h264 @ 0x878f8c]illegal short term buffer state detected
    [h264 @ 0x878f8c]concealing 1728 DC, 1728 AC, 1728 MV errors
    h264.c:4128: failed assertion `h->long_ref_count + h->short_ref_count <= h->sps.ref_frame_count'

    mencoder XviD gives me the same. mpeg4 ffmpeg gives me:

    Upgrade to iffmpeg....test the trial first.

    Or just buy RUROUNI KENSHIN on blu-ray and rip and convert with dvdfab for mac.

    The second option isn't an option--I did the subs myself and want to share with my family.

    I will try the upgrade though, thanks.

    I downloaded iffmpeg, but from all I'm reading, it does not support burning .srt files. :/ Is there a binary that does it? Because otherwise I'm back to ffmpegx and my mencoder still doesn't work. Any help appreciated.

    Feh, never mind, apparently the binary I downloaded was out of date. It seems to be working now. Apologies!
