I'm new to video editing and and have no idea how to use codecs (but I kind of know what they are). I've downloaded Cut Assistant and VirtualDub and enabled "Smart Rendering" by just checking the box. Is that all it takes for me to edit AVI files with single-frame accuracy? I see a "For Smart Rendering use this Codec: none, use default." Do I just leave it to this configuration?

    Thanks.

Also, I'm looking for an application that can do video editing while preserving ALL of the video's quality like Cut Assistant, but in addition to supporting wmv, mp4, and avi files, it supports mkv files as well.

No, you must also select the same codec as used in the source file and configure it with similar properties.

Ok. I have no idea how to deal with codecs--attached is what MediaInfo says of the video. Do I just google and download "XviD," the latest version? Do I ignore (Advanced Simple@L5) (BVOP1 / Custom Matrix)?

For example, there is only one place to download "XviD"? Only one company manages XviD and there are no different kinds of XviD?

Xvid is an open source implementation of the MPEG 4 part 2 standard. It can be downloaded from many places. I would get it from this site or Xvid.org. http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html

One you have installed it select it in VirtualDub. The default settings may be fine for what you're doing.
