VHS to Digital Artifacts

Hello,

I have been recording old home movies to my computer using the elgato video capture device. I have also tried with a tv tuner card. Both give the same results.

The issue is that the video capture records a severe jiggle when camera is being moved around a lot. However, it doesn't show up when I play directly to the tv.

Any help would be appreciated. Any software or hardware that can help with this? I tried running it through the tv then to the card, but it didnt work. The jiggle still shows up. I assume the Tv out is just a pass through. Something on the tv is stabilizing it. What can i put between the VCR and the tuner / elgato device to do the same? or is thee some software for this?

please provide capture device configuration, please provide video standard used as a source (or in other words, what color standard is on tapes - PAL/SECAM/NTSC and what is configuration for capture)

His YouTube profile states USA, so assume NTSC. At a minimum an external full frame TBC between the VCR and capture device is needed. Video that "looks fine" on a TV, but captures garbled is usually false Macrovision detection.

This is guessing - GIGO.

TBC is recommended but it is not mandatory...

Macrovision looks different.

The sync signals aren't clean enough for your capture card (TVs are much more forgiving). A different VCR or a different caputre device might work better. If not, you need a time base corrector.

I am in the USA (NTSC)

I am capturing using component video (SVideo output if not available on my VRC or old camcorder)
The included capture software has no settings.

I was going to try yet another capture device. Can someone recommend a good external capture device? I already spent 80 on this elgato, and I would hate to have to spend even more to have same result.

I have another TV tuner card I can dig out, but it only accepts a coaxial input. It's a Hauppauge Hvr 1600 I will try with that to see if I get the same result to rule out the capture device as the source of the issue.

If I need to go the TBC route, does anyone have a suggestion on devices?

IMHO before you spend next $ first you should contact with technical support for elgato, this can be problem related to software configuration (like slow/fast clamping settings) - perhaps they can advise something.

If you can't afford a TBC, try finding a used DVD recorder and use it as a passthrough.

Yeah, Ill try contacting Elgato first.

This is on an iMac. I just took a quick snapshot of QuickTime playing the video back.
I tired capturing on windows 7 as well. same exact result. Artifacts in the same place.
