The common ghost-blur video glitch.

I've been meaning to open a discussion about this for a long time....

I'm not sure if there is a name for this particular type of video glitch but it has been around for years and i've seen it occur in a few different video formats. Alot of you will be familiar with it.

This glitch takes place predominantly when pixels are moving fast, horizontally.

The picture causes a blurry ghosting trail which turns either multi-coloured or darker than the original picture. The glitch disappears upon a new camera shot (must be the radical change of pixels) or after a few seconds.


Now, here is the weird thing.....

Whenever the glitch is on screen, if you navigate forward or backward slightly (by clicking, not using arrows) the glitch goes away. However, if you navigate backwards past the point that it occurred it will happen again.

The mere fact that it can be remedied with navigation makes me think that there would have to be a way to permanently prevent it.


What is this glitch and are there any reputable solutions for it?

It sounds to me like you have too strong a temporal filter enabled on your graphics card.

Ok, i'll have to look into that.

I used to see it years and years ago on .mpg's when they were a big thing.

I don't really know what you're talking about. Can you upload a sample video or screen caps?

It might not be a problem with the video, but a problem with the display. Are you using an LCD? Could be LCD motion blur.

I seriously thought that this was a very common thing.

As described above, it's way more severe than LCD blur.

That's not ghosting, not ghost trails, nor is it motion blur.

Yes, those are gross encoding or decoding errors. Possible causes:

1) When reading the source video the editor/decoder screwed up. Either the source was corrupt or the codec was incompatible.

2) When the editor was encoding the codec screwed up.

3) The file created by the editor became corrupt after encoding.

4) The player screwed up because of a codec incompatibility.

Yes, that is what I am referring to but I used a weird description because I didn't know what to call the glitch at the time.

Thanks for the info jagabo. If this is a permanent problem then why is it that you can navigate slightly to fix it, yet if you let it play through the glitch lasts for longer. (not on the youtube video, obviously )

Then it's case 1 where the decoder is screwing up as it reads your source video. Use a different decoder.

Did you try the video on another computer or monitor?

Personally, I think it's at the hardware level - your graphics card is likely overheating and in need of replacement. Try and connect onboard instead and see if that helps.
