Trying to open an MP4 File that:
- was packaged to only work in a home grown application
- problem is developer is no longer around, and i need to edit the video files
When trying top open the video file, I receive an error stating
- unsupported format
- file may be damaged
The video plays fine in the custom user interface application that was developed.
It appears there is some type of block for this to only play in the custom application.
Anyway to get around this and play in other applications?
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

"When trying top open the video file, I receive an error stating"
These are common system errors ... with what application did you try to open the files with ?
"The video plays fine in the custom user interface application that was developed"
More info on the application ?
If you have a sample file which is less than 100mb you could upload it for others to attempt recovery unless they are security related ... its your choice. -
Also, just to be safe, run one of the videos through MediaInfo, with MediaInfo set to Tree/Text mode, copy all the information it gives you about the video and post it here (blank out the file and folder names, if you want).
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
Hello,
You could try to preview your unplayable file with http://mp4repair.org
This file probably contains correctly encoded media, that can be reindexed using a video repair tool like mp4repair.org
Of course, this won't work if the file has some encryption scheme.

If it's encrypted or uses a proprietary codec you could record it with a capture tool. I've used Mirillis Action to screen cap videos and they come out pretty good.
