Is it possible to repackage mp4 files to the matroska container without reconverting and playback issues? MP4 is kinda jerky and unstable as a format to non-PC environments, and i would like to try mkv instead.
This is the mediainfo log of said mp4

You can try Mkvtoolnix / mkvmergegui. Just add the mp4 and save as/start muxing as a new mkv. Disable also header compression under file->options->disable header removal compression for better compatibility.

Ok i tried it, i still have to test it this weekend on my ps3 and see if it playasback correctly. Thanks
-
I doubt the ps3 support any mkv.
Try instead stream the mp4 or mkv with ps3 media server if you can. -
No it does. With a piece of software called showtime that runs through homebrew. So this part is not worrisome. My only worry is if mkv supports all the streams that are supported on mp4 files.
-
MKV will support pretty much any type of audio or video stream supported by MP4, and a lot more. MKV is far more versatile in that respect. I'm not 100% sure about subtitle formats though as I rarely use them.

Mkv supports various types of subtitles(txt,graphics,etc..)
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
Ok tried it this weekend and all conversions worked perfectly. I now only need to ask if there's an automated way to repackage in one click mp4 and srt into mkv for lots of files. Cause using mkvmerge to add file 1 + srt 1 and add to job queue, then do the same for movie 2 + srt 2, ...., movie 10 + srt 10 is painful.
That's true, although once, i remember adding a subtitle format that had text placement, something like xy coordinates and it prompted me that mkv omits this information and views it as a plain file. Just thought i should note that. -
New Question. I had a 2CD avi with vobsub subtitles. Since my standalone player doesnt support the idx/sub format as external but it does inside matroska, i repackaged the xvid stream into matroska along with the subs. It resulted in not having video. Why couldnt my player handle xvid from inside mkv?

Try instead AVIAddXSubs and make a .divx/.avi with builtin xsubs.
