I want to avoid having to convert my TRP (transportable stream) video files (which reside in my Satellite DVR hard drive) to MPG format. It's too time intensive to convert hundreds of TRP files.

Can anyone out there let me know if a Windows Media Player codec exists that will enable it to play TRP files natively? In addition I installed VideoLAN and was dissapointed to find out that it doesn't play TRP files. Any help will be greatly appreciate. Thanks

  2. Are yo sure the TRP files aren't encrypted? In the USA virtually every cable/sat box stores the files encrypted -- only that cable/sat box will play the files it created. Precisely to stop you from making your own copies.

jagobo is correct the streams are most likely encrypted, try using projectX to open the files.

    Jagobo and Dragonkeeper,
Thanks for the post. To answer your question. The TRP files are not encrypted, they just need to go through a REMUX process which I wanted to bypass all together by just installing a Codec for Windows Media Player.

I have started a new thread to figure out what is the best batch convertor out there that batch converts all TRP files to MP4. Please check it out:

I have tried VideoRedo and it's not doing a great job. I'm going to try ProjectX to see if it does batch conversion.

  5. You have your terminology wrong. If you can remux the files and play them with WMP you already have the codecs you need. What you need a DirectShow TRP file reader/splitter.

Have you tried renaming them *.TS? Can you provide short sample?

    Jagabo,
Thanks for your reply. I changed the extension from TRP to ".TS" and the file still does not play in ether VideoLAN or WindowsMedia Player. I should point out that my WMP has the latest Kite Video Codec Pack installed and it doesn't seem to support TS or TRP.

I tested for several hours an app called EsoftRight SUPER. It works nicely on my XP PC, but on my Windows 7 64Bit PC it does not support the TRP files. On my XP PC it converts TRP files to MP4. The quality does not look bad and unlike the0 VideoRedo MP4 test file, the Super Mp4 video aspect ratio is not distorted.

These TRP files originate from a SonicView Satellite reciever. The SonicView runs a Linux OS. The process of converting these TRP files to play on my WMP I thought was known as REMUX. Sorry for getting the terminolgy wrong.

I'm going to test out DirecShow as well as ProjectX to see what works with my Windows 7 64bit system. Thanks for your reply again.

Try using MPC-HC to play the files, it actually has a stand alone package without and installer so you don't have to worry about installing anything extra on your system. WOuld it be possible to post a small sample video we could play with?

  8. info about TRP (transport stream) files:
    http://extension.nirsoft.net/trp

    .TRP sample videos:
    http://www.dveo.com/downloads/VGA2/sample-digital-signage-streams.html

The ones I downloaded were MPEG 2 video, MP2 audio. I've read some may contain AVC. All tools that can work with MPEG transport streams (usually .TS or .M2TS) worked with those files. Including re-muxers like MMG, Yamb, TsMuxer.

    This post might help:
