Hey everyone
I am attempting to convert a MPEG-2 file to x264, and the end result is strangely off sync. It's not as easy as delaying the audio track a bit, it's almost like the speed of the video and audio varies as it's playing.
The source file plays fine. The reason I am converting it is to crop off the noise and black bars, fix the aspect ratio, and save space.
Here's what I've tried so far:
- converting it directly to x264 using Xvid4PSP
- converting the file to huffy AVI in VirtualDub, then x264 in Xvid4PSP
- converting to uncompressed AVI in VirtualDub, then x264 in Xvid4PSP
Each time it is off sync, and a delay correction won't fix it.
I thought it might be a weird audio file, so I converted it to wav, then to mp3, and muxed it with the x264 video, still off sync.
I tried remuxing the source file before conversion, using AVIDemux, and the resulting MPEG file freezes on playback!
Here's the file details:
Some strange things about this file, it's not MPEG-2 standard since the resolution is crap, the FPS is 30, the AR is wrong, it's apparently interlaced but it doesn't look it during playback, and the audio is only 128kbps. Weirdly, windows reports this audio file as 32khz when I highlight the file.Code:General Format : MPEG-PS File size : 661 MiB Duration : 29mn 18s Overall bit rate mode : Variable Overall bit rate : 3 153 Kbps Video ID : 224 (0xE0) Format : MPEG Video Format version : Version 2 Format profile : Main@Main Format settings, BVOP : Yes Format settings, Matrix : Default Format settings, GOP : M=3, N=12 Duration : 29mn 18s Bit rate mode : Variable Bit rate : 2 962 Kbps Maximum bit rate : 8 000 Kbps Width : 472 pixels Height : 360 pixels Display aspect ratio : 4:3 Frame rate : 30.000 fps Color space : YUV Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0 Bit depth : 8 bits Scan type : Interlaced Scan order : Bottom Field First Compression mode : Lossy Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.581 Stream size : 621 MiB (94%) Audio ID : 192 (0xC0) Format : MPEG Audio Format version : Version 1 Format profile : Layer 2 Duration : 29mn 18s Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 128 Kbps Channel(s) : 2 channels Sampling rate : 44.1 KHz Compression mode : Lossy Stream size : 26.8 MiB (4%
Another thing that is strange, the video length says 29 mins 28 seconds in media player classic, but it stops at 29:18 like the file info says.
I don't know what's up with this video, but it refuses to convert nicely. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

First, there is no such thing as MPG-2 standard, you probably mean DVD standard, which is completely different.
Looks like a cropped SVCD-type file.
I would use SSRC to change the frequency of the audio, since most progs screw this up. Then look into the framerate issue if that doesn't solve it. -
Finally I got it working!
I used TMPGEnc to export the video as uncompressed AVI and it actually plays properly.
I didn't do anything special, just export AVI, cropped it, kept the fps the same. I don't know if TMPGEnc deinterlaced it, but I selected interlaced as the source.
But now the huge AVI file loads fine in Xvid4PSP and all is well!
Thanks everyone
