  1. Hi

I'm editing an MPEG2 (from a DVD) in TMPGENC Mastering Works 5 and about every other cut I make, I've been hearing a loud pop/clicking noise. They're at the end of all my cuts.

I can get around this using Sony Vegas and the crossfade transition...only thing is I lose quality in Vegas and the de-interlace method in TMPEG is second to none. Never mind the fact the hard cuts in TMPGENC look very professional.

    Any ideas?

  2. There is a description on the problem and remedy here.
However, it is not for TMPG Master Works. I don't use it, so I cannot advise.

Vegas pro smart renders mpeg2, if you set it up properly so there is no quality loss with simple cuts (only the few frames around a GOP cutsite if you are not cutting on keyframes). Only filtered sections, overlays, and transitions are re-encoded.

But if you are deinterlacing for whatever reason, the entire thing will be re-encoded. Avisynth offers some better deinterlacers than TMPGEnc

What kind of DVD is this and why are you deinterlacing?

First as said, Vegas smart edits MPeg2 but even so, most DVDs are progressive already.

Thanks trasporterfan (just tried this in Vegas, works nice), but I don't have a waveform in TMPG where I can detect the zero crossing points.

Well, I'm encoding the MPEG's to a HQ Divx file and eventually want to upload them to Youtube. I assume I will lose some quality. I've worked with Avisynth (restoration scripts), but I still like the results in TMPG better.

Strange that it shows as both progressive and top field first interlace. Is this camcorder video?

No, it's an NBA game from a recorded VHS tape. I bought the DVD's from a friend - and yeah that is weird. Most of them are Top Field / Interlaced.

I'm really not sure why I lose a considerable amount of quality in Vegas though. My project and media properties are set to that of the MPEG's. Absolutely identical. If I could just find out what is causing those loud pops/crackles in TMPG...
