What video and audio codecs are you using in your avi and mp4?
I would use
AVI with divx/xvid video and mp3 audio
MP4 with h264/avc video and aac or mp3 audio
MKV with h264/avc video and aac or mp3 audio
WMV with wmv3 video and wma audio -
your question is confusing, since you only list containers for video, but not the video formats,..
mkv, webm, mov, wmv, m2ts are common containers people like to use aside from avi, mp4 and ogv
as audio formats, people normally use:
flac, ac-3, dts, aac, pcm (additionally to the once you mentioned) -
WMV and MOV.
But just the container isn't enough. Like avi with dv video is worthless for any web usage. -
mp4 with MPEG-4 AVC aka. H.264 video and aac audio (for flash and quicktime)
webm with VP8 video and ogg vorbis audio (for html5) -

Assuming your clients mostly have modern browser, their browsers should all be html5 capable and able to playback webm video/audio. (really bad for not html capable browsers)
Assuming your clients mostly use the internet explorer, their browser can handle WMV/WMA. (really bad for mac&linux machines)
Assuming your clients mostly have flash installed, their browser can handle mp4. (assuming you embed it with a flash player)
Assuming your clients mostly using old Mac, their browser can handle at least handle quicktime comaptible mp4/mov files.(since quicktime comes with mac os)
-> depends on the way you plan to embed the content and the target group of users you aim for.

html5 wise different browsers support different stuff:
Firefox = webm (will probably add mp4 support at least for the tablet version)
Safari = mp4
Google Chrome = webm and mp4
Internet Explorer = mp4
Opera = webm
=> No there is no container that is supported by very one, but mp4(avc/aac) is probably the best choice since most people nowadays use the IE or support flash or html5 with mp4.

Then they are used to the restriction the device has. Modern smartphones should be html5 or flash capable. (this is the reason why google uses html5&flash)
People with old mobile devices usually are not capable to watch online video content at all,... -
