I 've down loaded so many programs suggested in many forums to hard code srt subs to both AVI and MP4 files, but have not been successful in getting them to work on my PC with Windows 7, 64 bit system. Can you please provide me with a simple solution that will work without downloading many applications to work.
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

What have you tried?
Freemake video converter is probably easiest, https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/331848-How-to-easily-convert-everything-to-anything...d-in-subtitles . Be sure to unselect the adware when you install freemake. -
Also you might learn some of the secrets if you use one of those suites like StaxRip or FAVC. Then look through the generated scripts. You may find an xml or ini file with a bunch of params for subtitles such as font size and placement. Usually at some point they use AviSynth VSFilter to burn them in. But there are probably several other methods.
