Hello everyone. I'm new here, hopefully I can get some help. I've recorded about a minute and a half of gameplay with fraps pro at 50 fps, and it's 4GB big. Its a .avi video. It's too big.
I also want to edit the video using an editor, with no luck. I used WMM first, but theres no picture playing .avi videos. Then I used PowerDirector 10, and it converts it to NTSC which makes the quality very bad?
The video is very high quality right now, I want to be able to make the size cut in half at least. I also want to be able to edit the video with a simple editor.
As you can see, I know nothing of video stuff. I'm sure this is simple to do, but very hard for me. Thanks if you can help.

You'll probably want h264 in a mp4 or mkv container. Programs like format factory are a good choice. There are a lot of choices so you can experiment. Many are free. Handbrake is another.
Also note you'll probably have some quality loss if you are changing screen resolution. If you are running a resolution higher than 1920x1080 than you'll lose some detail. Also converting to 720p will lose quality as well. It will be a big step down to standard def at 480p (for ntsc) 576p for pal.
And please note you'll still need a relatively high bitrate to preserve the quality. A bitrate calculator will let you know what the filesize would be.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Yes, I'm fine with 720p. So basically I'll just use a free tool to lessen the quality which will make the size smaller?
Your post is kinda complicated for me. Here's some things Im not understanting:

h264 is the codec. I'm sure you've heard of divx or xvid. It is a different form of codec compared to those.
Mp4 or Mkv is the container the video goes in. Its the .mp4 or .mkv extension that would be at the end of the file name.
You should read up on the guides in the convert section that I posted to get more familiar with the whole process. I don't think there is a generic video conversion 101 guide exactly. But the glossary might help as well.

virtualdub.
But if you need a lot more editing like wipes and pans and fades and stuff like that you might need a full editor like sony vegas or adobe (not sure what there video program is called).
But if you need to just cut and things like that virtualdub will do it.
Glad to help. Good luck.

I'd encode that fraps video only once,
-try to load it into Sony Vegas Movie studio platinum trial, that's very good editing software, edit it and export for Youtube
-if Sony Vegas doesn't load it perhaps with ffdshow and enabled fraps with vfw ffdshow configuration it will
-or you can use VirtualDub (if you do not have ffdshow), load it, and export uncompressed video or any lossless codec, Lagarith, Hufyuv etc.
-load it into Vegas again
