    hello all,

I own a Philips HTS 5550/98 home theater system. When I play movies in them (AVI), some file audios are identified as 5Ch and some as 5.1Ch, even though all the files claim to be 6 channel surround. Please clarify this doubt and how's your opinion on HTS 5550/98?
    Thanks

I can't comment on the home theater as I don't have it.

However I do own one dvd that is a 5.0 dvd. It is a Phil Collins concert dvd. The live in Paris solo concert tour from the 90s (I think its the 90s - its the one with the "Wear my Hat" and "Lorenzo" debuted for the live versions.

Generally speaking though at least as far as movies are concerned they are usually 5.1 audio tracks. But if they are concerts you can run into odd mixes like 5.0 so its not impossible.

    HOW do they do that?

Filenames and metadata (aka "tags") can be deceiving.

Get an up-to-date build of MediaInfo and see what it says about those .AVIs

These channel designations are all totally legit for AC-3 (aka Dolby Digital):
    1.0 ch (mono)
    2.0 ch (dual mono/stereo/dolbyprologic/binaural)
2.1 ch (same as just above, but with LFE)
    3.0 ch (L-C-R)
3.1 ch (same but with LFE)
    4.0 ch (Lf-Rf-Lr-Rr, aka Quad)
    5.0 ch (Lf-C-Rf-Lr-Rr)
5.1 ch (same but with LFE)
There may be more. With DD-EX you get 6 & 7 channel extensions.

Now, how these are "claimed/described" in whatever app is doing the describing, is another matter (some get it right, some don't).

5.1 is sometimes called 6ch as there are six channels of output.
