    Hello

I’m trying to capture some vhs videos of weddings holidays from my VCR to Camcorder (pass-thru method) to PC (via Firewire). I first tried the S video connection on VCR to DVC and even though the tape is playing there is no sound and the picture is stuck on the VCR menu screen.

I then tried S video connection through Scart RGB and the video plays but its in black & white with the occasional splash of colour for about half a second and there is no sound just a loud hum, and there is a see-thru mesh like pattern which is visible on the captured Scart S video during playback.

I then tried composite and that works, could it be a damaged S video cable or something else

I provided lots of photos so that you can see what’s happening

    Thanks again for reading this

    Bob

  2. S-Video carries only the video, so you'll still need to hook up the red and white audio cables.

A SCART output on a VCR(or any other device for that matter) isn't always wired to output S-Video. Just because that adapter you stuck in there has an S-Video connection does not mean you will get one. Been There - Done That.

    1) Video : Connect straight your DVD player S-Video output to your DVC S-Video input with the S-Video cable
    2) Audio : Connect the DVD audio output (the red and the white cables from SCART out adapter or RCA Cinch on the rear panel) to your DVC audio input headphone socket
    3) Maybe you may enter into your DVC Video input menu : some DVC need to know if they are fed with S-Video or Composite Video !!!
    4) DVD Player : sometimes, the output signal may be set with "AUTO" and it can be also set with "NTSC" or "PAL" !!!

    Hello

Many thanks to all your response, I used the methods that you describe as I did’nt know that Svideo only carried video not audio.

I’m assuming that this VCR/DVD Combi will not output a S video signal in VCR mode all I get is a display of the home screen I can hear VCR tape playing sound (voices etc) .
But if I switch to DVD Mode and put a DVD in , it plays

    Here more photos to explain

True. Stop using the S-video cable. It is no use to you. Your VCR does not have an S-video output. That's just for the DVD player part.

    Cheers,
    David.

    Many Thanks again for helping

Its looks like i'm in a 'pickle' and the only option is the composite connection, since i'm only ever going to transfer VHS to PC once i wanted to use the best quality transfer (svideo)

If there no other way (or a hack to enable Svideo in VCR mode) I'm flexible to invest in a second hand PAL VCR that would allow me to do this (any Recomendations)

    thank you again for reading

  8. You sure the s-video isn´t for the VCR too?
As it isn´t in the "Exclusive DVD Connections".

Bob52, If you do find a PAL VCR with S-video, please tell me. I am also looking for one with no luck at all in the secondhand market.

They're all over the place. For example:

  11. Anyone tried HS820 or 830?
Cause the information i can find on them is rather disturbing.
Like more noise, PSU on the main board etc, don´t know if it´s for both, or only 830 though.
