This is such a noob question, sorry if it sounds dumb.
I've got a S-VHS player and a Canopus ADVC-100.
I'm gonna digitize some regular VHS content (ie not S-VHS) and wonder if there's any benefit in still using a S-VHS cable to do this?
Or will I get the exact same signal using Scart/Phono cables?
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

I use S-VHS connections exclusively for all of my captures. Now I need to find another S-VHS machine because mine just died.

Yes, you should get slightly better caps by sending it through an S-Video cable.
It's not S-VHS cable, by the way. The cable is S-Video. -
V-VHS - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-VHS
S-Video - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-video
To be fair, Wikipedia states that the S-video cable has also been known as an "S-VHS connector". -
Many devices use s-video cables. Cable boxes, satellite boxes, DVD players, etc.
Using s-video instead of composite should eliminate dot crawl artifacts.

It is often incorrectly attributed. Note that the 'S' in S-VHS stands for Super as in "Super VHS", a marketing term used to summarize the benefits over regular VHS (resolution mostly) where the 'S' in S-Video stands for separated, not super, a technical term referring to the y/c (luma/chroma) separation.

You may find the wordings of s-video,s-vhs,Y/C,ushiden or oshiden cable, all of these are synonyms !
It is also used for HI8 and may be used for DV camcorders if you cannot extract digital signal from them and also from other devices as DVB receivers ...
It is better to use Y/C connexion when you can;both source an input may some times have to be set on Y/C in their menu if you want everything to work well... -
Ahh... dot crawl - I didn't realise there was a name for it.
Off topic from the original thread, but I have a VHS video with dot crawl in it throughout (it was a transfer from some broadcast format). Is there any digital filtering or other jiggery pokery that can get rid of it/reduce it? -
there's a dotcrawl comb filter plugin by scott elliot for virtual dub...
