Freemake video converter is very easy, choose to avi and change preset like avi xvid for standalone dvd players.

  4. If you have a set top box or other way to play HD avi, Quick AVI Creator will keep the same resolution by default. It's a bit quirky, but it can produce good results in one pass using xvid_encraw. The main quirk is it tends to suggest a bit rate that's much too low. For HD avi I would bump it up to at least 3000 kbit.

To get a one pass mode you need to add these lines to xvid.presets file:
( leave a blank line before the [One Pass Mode] line like an .ini file.)

    [One Pass Mode]
    xvid_encraw.exe -i "$video_input" -pass1 "xvid.stats" -bitrate $video_bitrate -avi "$video_output"

Or you can just use 2 pass. I think you have to start a run and abort it to get the presets file to edit as it's generated by a python script.

Format Factory or Xmedia Recode are the 2 I use. Use Media Info for your settings. Use XVID and a Bitrate somewhere between 2500 & 3000. Make sure that Frames per second and Aspect ratio is the same as original.

I forgot to mention...convert MKV to 720x480 if NTSC or 720x576 for PAL.
