  1. Is it TMPGenc or just me? It seem that since I've installed the updated version, I can't convert most of the downloaded avi files to mpeg anymore. I keep getting a unrecognized file type error, I downloaded the older divx 3.11 codec, but that didn't help either.

  2. The problem is most likely with the audio, not the video. To quote their forums, Tmpgenc "DOESN'T DO MP3," which is what the audio in these newfangled avis is saved as.

Here's how to get around it, the ordained-by-God-Reverend-Jake way:

    1) Download and install VirtualDub.

    2) In VD (bad acronym, I know), open up your avi file.

    3) On the audio tab, choose "full process." Under "conversion," make sure it's saving as an uncompressed .wav.

    4) Go to the "file" menu, and choose "save as WAV."

This'll separate the audio from the file into a separate wav file on your HD. Then, in Tmpgenc, choose your avi file as the video source and the wav file as the audio source.

Not only did this get rid of the "unrecognized file type" errors for me, but it fixed some nagging sync issues I'd been having.

    Hope this helps!

  3. If you can play the avi's, you may want to try going into Tmpgenc, underOption, Environmental setting. Go to VFAPI plugin, you will want to note the current settings, hold your mouse over the names and look for the ones that deal with avi's - you will get a yellow popup window to tell you what tht name deals with, try raising the priority on one of the ones for avis and try again. I am not sure which you will need to raise, but you could try the directshow one first - raise it so it has the highest number.
Another thing is, are the avi's encoded with ac3? If so, you will need to find a plugin for that.
