I have a Gateway netbook (xp, 1.6 Ghz processor, 140Gb hardrive). There is only the one C drive and I want to make another partition, so the c drive will be about 70GB and the new partition will be about 70GB. Then I want to back up the new C drive to a bootable restore DVD. ( I first plan to remove the expired factory trial software, (like Microsoft Office) so that the whole c drive will fit on one DVD.)
Question 1) : What free software is recommended to do this? I googled and found "Easeus Partition Master". Is this a good choice or is there something better?
Question 2) : What free software can be used to backup just the c partition to a DVD?
"Easeus " also has a free software to do this. Is this a good choice or is there something better?
Question 3) What other problems should I watch out for when doing this?
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

1) GParted works and is free. You run it from a Linux live boot CD.
3) Compressing 70 GB to 4.3 GB for backup is unlikely. Fist move all the CAB files to an external disk. Those are already compressed. You will have better luck using an external USB drive.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

edDV: Well, jimdagys did say he was going to remove some of the material in the partition. But, yeah, it's highly unlikely that you could cut that amount down enough to fit on even one double-layer DVD.
I'm not sure if I'd take the chance of screwing up the restore partition by attempting to remove things, anyway. Does your system allow you to make a set of restore discs from the partition? Why not do that, anyway, just to be safe? Or, perhaps you can still buy a set of restore discs for the system from the manufacturer. If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
Yes, the Gateway has a simple tool to create a factory restore DVD. Unfortunately, because of the trial software, I need to use 2 DVDs. I'm going to make the backup DVD as soon as I buy a USB burner. See attached photo.
Apparently somewhere there is already a backup image of the OS, because 4.66GB is way larger than the OS and the few programs and files that are on this computer.Last edited by jimdagys; 30th Nov 2011 at 21:51.
