  1. Leaving the Mp4 optimization box unchecked had no effect. When I selected the image as Oreons suggested, it didn't show in the main screen that it was going to add any artwork, and when I processed the file, it didn't include any artwork.

I didn't do a full re-encode, just a repack as a test, but it let me add a cover. It did show in the main window for me.

Step-by-Step, as far as what I did....

    1- Load a file
    2- change to edit mode
    3- Edit (top right)
    4- Search and add text/artwork
    5 Tick mp4 optimization
    6- save
    7- start

I do batches of 10-20 files at a time like this, just repeat 1-6 each time, then start. Pretty sure it's no different throwing any encoding in the mix, it's always come out fine for me.

  3. Ah, that was it! I wasn't clicking the "Search" button at the top right. I was just double clicking the file to bring me into "Edit", then doing the search and artwork selection from there, which doesn't save the art work.

Are you sure step 3 was click "Edit"? If I do that, it doesn't add the art work, but if I click the "Search" on the top right, then it does.

Oreons, any way you can automatically strip the year from the name before submitting it to iTunes?

  4. So step-by-step this is what I am doing now:
    1) Load all the files
    2) Select file
    3) Click "Search" on the top right
    4) Delete the year from the name
    5) Click "search"
    6) Click artworks tab
    7) Select image (the iTunes image if available)
    8) Click save
    9) Click "Edit" on the top right
    10) Check "Mp4 optimization"
    11) Click save
    12) repeat steps 2-11 for the rest of the files
    13) Click start

    Alternately, you can

    1) Load all the files
    2) Select file
    3) Click "Edit" on the top right
    4) Delete the year from the name
    5) Click "search" (top right of same window)
    6) Choose movie if needed, click artworks tab
    7) Select image (the iTunes image if available)
    8) Click save

it should take you back to the edit window at this point...

    9) AFTER you add the artwork, Check "Mp4 optimization" (next to "write tags" / top left)
    10) Click save
repeat for the rest of the files

might make it slightly less tedious.

  6. Unfortunately, that is what I was originally doing, and it doesn't add the artwork when I do it that way.

It does work for me when I do it that way. I am using the 0.224Test1 though, that oreons linked to me in a post on the previous page. He would need chime in on that one as to what he may have changed.

No matter, if it works that for you that way, awesome!!! lol

  8. I'll give that one a try. It would be nice if there was a way to save the queue as well since I just queued up 26 items, set all the images, tags, and subtitles, and it crashed on the first file. Yuck.

While I am at it, I'll just make a wish list:
    1) Fix adding images through the edit page.
    2) Stop turning off "MP4 optimization", ever.
    3) Option to auto add all subtitles of specified languages (or unknown languages)
    4) Save/Load queue
    5) Automatically remove year from names when submitting to iTunes so the image will come up
    6) I realize I'm the odd man out, but being able to parallel process the files, at least 2-3 at a time. Most steps are single threaded, so my PC sits mostly idle while processing large batches using 1 core of my 6.
    7) Option to automatically pull in tags and image from the first/best match when first added to the queue.

I haven't had it crash on me, but I can see that sucking big time!!!! It would be a nice feature. As I tend to use it to add tags/subs to many files at a time myself.

Although it says that MP4Box ran out of memory, I highly doubt it. I show the peak usage on my machine was 6.8GB and I have 64GB of ram in this machine.

    About the artworks.
To save artworks in the search, use the call to search through the main window. Search via tag editing dialog do not save artwork.

  14. Oreons, talking about images, i have a request.
In the edit window, when i put the mouse over the name of the image file, you show the image in a good size (maybe could be more).
Could you put this feature when the mouse is over the artwork tab, in the search windows. (maybe with option in config to turn on/off, if someone dont like it)

Why this: I always look for the artwork in spanish, and the most part of time is difficult to identify the text in the artwork to notice the difference of languages.

On the flip side, one of the reasons i started saving my artwork manually is because I was not able to tell if it wasn't in English everytime, lol. Had several with the wrong language myself! Usually on the smaller print.

And all I want to do is, to get an M4K file/container, being well displayed by ATV3.
Unfortunately, iTunes accept the file, my ATV3 starts playing - but no picture is being displayed.
I guess, it has to do with the 50fps (ATV supports only up to 30 fps), but I'm not sure.

Here's the media info for the file after the proccessing with MVKtoMP4:

I'd try a constant bitrate instead of variable, while sticking within the below parameters

    Video Bitrate: constant @ 2500K or 3000k
Frame Rate: 29.97fps or 30fps depending

Thank you, I'll give it a try with the bitrate.

Because I know where to adjust the bitrate - but I don't know where to set the framerate.
The only place I've found was a double-click on the video track, in the upper right corner is a field "framerate".
When I use the value "30" there, I can see in the LOG it'ts being used as parameter for mp4box - but the result file is again 50fps.

The question is: Where can I force the tool to override the framerate to use a fixed value?

And, yes, encoding would possibly solve the issue anyway - but I don't want to re-encode, because it lasts for hours.

It should let you modify the fps, you input it as 30.000? If I understand the program right though, repacking it just "mirrors" the source closely while putting it into a new container. You would have to actually re-encode to have any real impact on the fps/bitrate.

Just off the top of my head, I would think you should be able to slow the fps down without re-encoding though.
    Quote Quote
  21. MKVtoM4V as its name would imply is for converting from the mkv container to the m4v container mostly with doing as little re-encoding as possible. However, your source isn't mkv, and it isn't possible to have it playable without reencoding it. The variable bit rate is actually preferable so long as the maximum bit rate doesn't exceed a certain limit (which I forget what it is). I believe it is the frame rate that is causing it to not play on your Apple TV 3, as I have one myself, but I've never used a satellite source.

You would likely be better served by using handbrake to reencode your file if you are concerned about retaining as much quality as possible, or using another tool such as dvdfab that can offload the reencode to either the GPU or use intel's quickpath technology if your processor/chipset supports it. Once reencoded, you can use mkvtom4v to put all the tags on it so it shows nice cover art, description, artists, ratings, etc.

1 - My MKV have 5.1 AAC audio. Can Apple TV play files with this audio? It is my understanding that it will convert AAC audio to 2.0 PCM. If it takes 5.1 AAC audio, converts it to 2.0 PCM and I can play back as Dolby PLII, I am good.

2 - After the conversion and when I load into itunes, if I play it back in itunes, it shudders a few times during playback, Has anyone else seen this too? Does it shudder with Apple TV.

Other question, does it matter if I use mp4 or m4v? My files will be well over 4GB if that matters.

    THX, JNT.

    Try this version https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7183431/0.224Test/3/MkvToMp4.exe
    (Replace mkvtomp4.exe)
    oreons,
I was having the same problem as dakon720, when adding subtitles the video went to 23 fps instead of 23.976.

The file with this new version worked fine, solved the FPS issue.

Thanks for this application it´s great.

  26. Hi,

I would like to ask for a feature request for some of us Apple TV 1st Gen. owners.
Would it be possible instead of "Repack the MPEG4 Visual Video" option to have the possibility to save the xvid/divx avi as a self contained QuickTime-Movie. Cause not all repacked files are played well on the ATV 1st Gen.
The procedure is described here: http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/How_to_get_iTunes_to_sync_other_video_formats_to_Apple_TV
It is also possible to tag those mov-Files. So they would perfectly play on a hacked ATV 1st Gen. and the Files would also have all their Metadata.

Would you consider to integrate that Feature in a future release?
Mac-Tools like VideoDrive are already doing this automatically. See here Import Method 4 http://www.aroona.net/VideoDrive/Import_Methods.html

Thanks again for all your great work and that wonderfull tool

    Regards
    Vlaves

Yes, I read these too. For what is worth, I used a 480p MKP video with 5.1 AAC, wrapped it into a MP4 file and gave to a friend to play on his IPAD 2. Had no issue with the video playback and the sound was clear stereo. Given that the IPAD runs a close version of IOS that is used by Apple TV, I dont think I will have an issue.

  28. iTunes is the worst video player on the market, no matter what system you have. I have a beast of a machine, and it can't play back 1080p video at what seems like more than 5 FPS. VLC plays back the same video and uses negligable CPU, and my iPhone 5 and Apple TV 3 have no issues either. iTunes/Quicktime on Windows isn't even usable.

I think you are right on the Itunes thing. I took the same video that shuddered and played with VLC; no issue. Have you played a video with 5.1 AAC audio on Apple TV? Any issues? Home does it sound going through a home theater system?
