    1) GUI for dvdauthor. It's free and works well for me.
    2) Don't have one, but Any Video Converter Pro has a lot of presets. I use it often to convert odd formats to something more usable for my system.
    3) AVIDemux if I'm just converting to a AVI type format. I prefer VIrtualDub, but it's more limited for formats, but I like it's video filtering options and layout more.
    4) Handbrake works well for me. I only use it for DVD>MKV conversions. I use RipBot for BD>MKV conversions.
    5) ConvertXtoDVD. I sometimes convert my HD MKVs to DVD and it seems to do the job with no problems.

Of course you are going to get a multitude of different answers.

  3. 1) DVDAuthorGUI (for menus), or MuxMan (if I don't want menus).
    2) Don't have a mobile, but I would probably use Freemake.
    3) VirtualDub (with avisynth script), or AviDemux
    4) n/a (don't deal with mkv)
    5) ConvertXtoDVD

...Pretty similar to redwudz's answers, actually.

    1) Muxman or TDA1.6 (to mux), TAW4 (for menu only), DVDRemake (to combine tested DVD parts with menu)
    5) AviSynth + DGAVCIndex + CCE -> 1)

    2)...4) - I never do those conversions

Moving you to our general forum section as this is not a software playing issue.

I use avidemux or virtualdub for all conversions. It was a long time ago I did any dvd authoring...

    1) DVD Lab pro (entry level prosumer software reasonably price and can do things freeware is unable to)
    2) For Mobiles (don't do video on mobile phone resolution sucks 4.3" @ 800 x 430)
    3) No avi in my house (To many formats that are superior to avi)
    4) Ripbot264, (use avisynth script that can be tweak to compensate for video issues in DVD)
    5) WHY?? (There are a few legitimate reasons to do so, but most are not. Something I tend to stay away from)

Murphy's law taught me everything I know.

    1) DVD Lab Pro (simple and can do just about anything as far as authoring goes)
    2) N/A
    3) N/A
    4) MakeMKV (very nice proggie that let's you decide which audio/subs streams you want to keep with no encoding...space is not an issue for me)
    5) The FilmMachine w/neuron2's DGDecNV (i don't use the authoring function...i use DVD-Lab Pro)

  12. thanks for all reply,
so all post suggest that 4) DVD To MKV is not many people use ? (i think lots of people this days using Bluray)
(but in India VCD is out dated & bluray is too expensive,so most of the people dealing with DVd's)
i still hanging with Handbrake for mkv,but now some options are now open to me ! (avidemux,ripbot264)

    1) DVD Authoring
GfD, Free, simple to use, doesn't reencode spontaneously.

    2) For Mobiles
XMediarecode, but recent versions have gone to shit.

    3) Any file to AVI
    Avidemux probably.

    4) DVD to MKV
    Dunno

    5) MKV to DVD
Avisynth (using ffmpegsource2), HCEnc, Aften, GfD

My preference is for things that can be scripted or run from batch files.
Once you work them out, very very fast to set up and go.

I use the same tools for Win/Mac/Linux - I find command line tools are faster and i like having them portable. Fmpeg for all formats or container conversions and DVDauthor for authoring (simple no menu stuff). If dealing with DVDs, mplayer for the crop, or other filters that are helpful for analyzing. If there's a need for linear editing, i mainly use Windows because avisynth & vdubmod - but still convert with ffmpeg/mencoder to target. If i need to rip (VOB>MPG) i will use mencoder (w/anydvd).

    1. DVD Authoring
    DVDLab Pro

    2. Mobiles
    Nothing. Not something I do.

    3. Any file to AVI
    Avidemux

    4. DVD to MKV
    Handbrake

    5. MKV to DVD
    AVStoDVD (using HCenc)

The main reason for using them: these tools simply work for their intended task. AVStoDVD is probably my favorite of the bunch. I've been working with blu ray sources here lately, and that isn't among your choices. For that, I like BD Rebuilder.
