    I'm trying to add a transition (Dissolve) however I want to extend the length of the transition, currently it's about 1 second and I want it longer...... how can I do this?

    I've tried resizing it with my mouse but this just resizes the whole video.. or should I try and split it from the rest of the video and then resize it?

    If you mean the "New still image" option then that is set at 5 seconds; however the transition I inserted is nowhere near 5 seconds; not sure why??

    no. a new still image is a picture added to the timeline. try adjusting the overlap time in preferences and then adding the effect. or right clicking on the fade and adjusting it's properties. or control/click/drag the fade line.
