  1. I have an mkv with subtitles but for lack of a better way of putting it they are embedded within the file but not like a hard sub. When converting the file, the subs go unrecognized and are absent from the dvd files.

    You might have to extract the subtitle file from the mkv with mkvextractgui2 and then add the subtitle in your dvd converter.

    But I think convertxtodvd supports subs in mkv directly.

    Not in my experience. I would question those 'reviews'/reviewers. It works very well for me. Most any encoder program can produce good quality. Depends on the settings used.
