  1. Hello
just bought two DVD+R DL 8.5 GB discs, the cheapest ones in my town, brand is Banana Digital.
price is equivalent to USD 0.5 per disc.
Google said the manufacturer is Guangzhou Banana Computer Technology, Co. Ltd in China.

I run identifier and here's the result:
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R-DL:RICOHJPN-D01-067]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R DL] - [DVD+R DL]
Manufacturer Name : [Ricoh Co. Ltd.]
    Manufacturer ID : [RICOHJPN]
    Media Type ID : [D01]
    Product Revision : [067]
    Blank Disc Capacity : [4,173,824 Sectors = 8.55 GB (7.96 GiB)]
    Recording Speeds : [2.4x , 3.3x-8x]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    [ DVD Identifier V5.2.0 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

both discs so far perform flawlessly, smooth burning and playing. I use Sony DRU-880S burner.
is it correct that Ricoh = Banana?????

More likely scenario would be that someone faked the media code.

Since they're not faking the packaging, no reason for them to fake the media code.
Ricoh may have outsourced to Banana.
And they just produce more under their own label.

panjilaras - It would seem that you don't understand that Ricoh is NOT considered to be a quality blank disc manufacturer. The ONLY DL media we recommend around here is Verbatim DVD+R DL. That's it. We've had posts like yours before crowing about how some crap discs "work flawlessly" and then 1 or 2 years later the same guy will come here crying about his his discs won't play anymore. Either you care enough to buy good media or not. If you don't that's fine, but even if AlanHK is right, and he may well be, that doesn't mean that your discs are anything more than the usual non-Verbatim DL crap that's out there.

    crap discs
I don't know that I'd call RICOH DL media "crap" necessarily, but it's a far cry from MKM. Banana may be faked, or maybe not. I'd lean more towards fake, depending on the brand's reputation. The word "China" isn't good. Most Chinese media is fake. Not all, but most.

Media codes have been faked for a decade now.

In this case, it's not "faking" in an attempt to deceive. They're using their own brand name.
I suspect that they are identical to the ones they make for Ricoh, except for the branding, so it's hardly counterfeiting.
If you were going to fake a media code, why fake Ricoh?

I just use Verbatim "Made in Japan", which has TY media codes, and I'm pretty confident these aren't fake.

    A ridiculous statement.

    Based on what?

If you have Verbatim DVD+R DL media with a TY code, you'd be be worried.

    A ridiculous statement.

A company called "Banana" sells discs unde the "Banana" brand, and you think they're trying to trick consumers with the media code, which most are unaware of, and they can't check till after they've bought it anyway.

Based on the definition of "counterfeiting".

If you were going to fake a media code, why fake Ricoh?
There are any number of reasons.
But you can't think of any.

I just use Verbatim "Made in Japan", which has TY media codes, and I'm pretty confident these aren't fake.

Yes, I should be worried, Verbatim is such a shady brand, how could I trust them?
But I've burnt 500 or so over the last 6-8 years, no problems.

Your omniscience obviously gives you the power to discern what kind of discs I have better than me.

"Supply-line fraud" That's an interesting turn of phrase. Sounds like it means something.
Googling for it finds it used once, in the post you just made.
Fraud implies someone is cheating someone, but I don't see how that works.

Who is getting cheated by using this unadvertised media code, and how?

Those words specifically referred to the discs I have, that you have never seen.
Verbatim brand discs bought from authorised Verbatim dealers. That you assume must be fake, because... because...

  15. hi guys
do you think running K-Probe2 or DVDInfo on burned Banana discs might reveal something?
I can do it and post the result if you think it's beneficial.
I don't really know how to interpret the result though haha...

You can run KProbe or Nero CD/DVD Speed, or OptiDisk Control if you have a good scanning drive. All it will do is depress you with the amount of errors and the spike of PIF's at the layer break. Might run TRT scans as well, just to see how well they read in your drive right now.

Enjoy the disks while they last. Get ready to replace them with Verbatim DL media before they fail completely.

Yeah, I'm doubtful those tests are all that useful. Although I do verify all my burns.

I'd use those discs for "tossers", i.e. for unimportant, easily replaceable stuff.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!
