    Hello:

The file in question is an MKV file for the movie "Sharkwater".

It plays smoothly on both MPC and VLC, subtitles and all, but when I try to watch it on my BD player, I get this:

I hit OK but nothing happens. I ran it through MKVInfo but, as a total newbie, I really don't know what to look for. I'm attaching the Info file just in case (Sorry it's in Spanish. MKVToolnix self-installed in Spanish, even though I specifically told it to install in English)

Every other MKV I've downloaded plays fine both on my PC and my BD player except this one.

    Please help. Thanks!

I didn't do any of those things. But I see your point.

I suspect it is down to header compression. Run the mkv file through mkvmerge and set the compression for both video and audio to none (this is under the 'extra options' tab).

Turns out it was a matter of changing the video track's AVC level from L5.1 to L4.1.

After several sessions of trial and error, first using MKVExtractGUI to demux the MKV to get the raw H264 file, then using H264Info to try to change the AVC level by following these instructions –which only managed to corrupt the raw H264, since afterwards MKVMergeGUI could simply not remux the MKV back together– I did some more research and found this simple, easy to use tool:
No demuxing/extracting from the MKV or tampering with the H264 file required. I just loaded the MKV container file, selected "4.1" from the drop-down menu, and clicked on "Change level". That was it. Now it plays like a charm on my BD player.

    Anyway, geeman: thanks!
