Where do I start - develop small app to convert avi to jpg

Hi All,

I'm new to video processing. I am very keen to build a simple application to convert AVI to jpg. I know free ones exist. But, I'd still like to develop an application to help me learn more about avi's and to hone my programming skills a bit with a real project.

I'm familiar with VB, so that's not a problem. I just don't know how to process an avi file nor how I would programmatically extract the frames from that file.

Where should I start? What is required to extract frames out of the avi to individual jpgs? I'd appreciate any helpful advice.
