    Hello

I am planning to resize the resolution of an avi so that itll play on my dvd player. The original is 1280x534 at 3.5 GB in size.

I will use virtualdubmod and its resize filter with the lanczos setting and the latest xvid codec.

My questions are, will I get better quality video if I were to use another video conversion program like AutoGK or will I get the same results just using vdubmod and configuring the xvid codec?

    Thank you.

It probably depends on what you know. If you know nothing (and if that 1280x534 video is an AVI), you'd be better off using AutoGK. Since from the sound of it you're new to this, I'd recommend AutoGK. Having said that though, theoretically you should be able to make a better reencode doing it all manually (and using AviSynth scripts to frameserve).

The phrase, "so it'll play on my DVD player" is loaded. Could mean standard spec DVD-Video, could be Xvid on Data DVD.

If it's the former, you're going about it all wrong - you need to encode to MPEG2 and Author to be compliant.

If it's the latter, I'd agree with what manono suggested.

I shouldve clarified that part, sorry.

I have a Philips dvp3560. 1280x534 resolution is not supported.

I tried AutoGk but for some reason it doesnt allow me to choose a width of 699.

Im now experimenting with avisynth. The video quality of the original is excellent already so Im just testing different resize options.

    Thanks.

Why on Earth would you want a width of 699? For a number of reasons AutoGK allows widths that are a multiple of 16. Just choose 640 or something it does allow. No other program will allow 699 either.

300 isn't a multiple of 16 either (or even a multiple of 8, which is often OK).
    Use 304.

  8. Like I said, there are good reasons for using resolutions which are multiples of 16. 300 isn't one. It isn't even a multiple of 8.

If using AutoGK, you can pick a 720 width and might get a 720x304 video back. If using VDub, of course you can choose 720x300.

That's what I get for 'multitasking'. Gavino beat me to it.

Will the quality of the video be better if I use 304 instead of 300?

A bit better. But its more compatible (multiple 16) with various softwares, codecs and hardwares.

Your Philips manual/FAQ says you should encode to "Home Theatre Profile" to be truly compatible. Whatever resolutions are part of that profile are the ones you should use.

Best to stick the video into DVD Flick and have it make the DVD. At least you'll know the video will play that way.
There are no problems - only chances to excel.

Im going to be placing the converted video onto an external drive.

I tested a sample at 720x304 and it plays perfectly.

    Thanks for the help.
