    Gents,

    My goal is to successfully:

    a) Extract all of the material from a dvd and save it as a unified/joined MPEG-2 file.

    b) Then with the appropriate MPEG editor, cut out some unwanted content, close the gap and save as an MPEG-2 NTSC (SD 4:3) file for local broadcast.

My first attempt bombed out as I neglected to factor in that the solution I tried preserved the original AC3 file which the cable station cannot play as they mandate all submissions have MPEG-layered audio as well.

My first attempt used VOB 2 MPEG v3 then Wombles MPEG-VCR program.

Other than the audio that pair did a nice job and it was easy to execute!

So the audio is the 1,000 pound gorilla in the room.

How do I achieve points (a) + (b) and end up with MPEG layered audio instead of AC3?

If I submit a dvd with AC3 there will be not audio when broadcast!!

Love to hear any solutions and workflows that will solve this case.

Step by step guidance or a tutorial would accelerate the process.

    Thanks in advance.

    aedipuss:

What easy to use straight forward programs would you reccommend to do those additional steps?

  4. Thre's lots of ways to do both. For demuxing, open the MPG in DGIndex and File->Save Project and Demux Video. That'll give you the AC3 audio (you can also convert it to WAV audio at the same time in the Audio Menu) and an M2V video. Many audio programs can convert the audio to MPA (MP2) audio, if that's what you have to have (which I find unusual as you're in the US). I'd use BeSweet or Headac3he. Remux using ImagoMPEG-Muxer. There are many other ways also.

MPEGVCR can go from AC3 to MPEG....just like the OP wants.

The key thing is to replace the AC3 audio with mp2 and then put the MPEG back together without re-encoding.

Any thoughts on the last part of the above sentance?

Demux and remux....MPEGVCR also does that as well. Look under "tools".

MPEG Streamclip has an export option that converts an .mpg file with AC3 audio to a .mpg file with MP2 audio. This option would eliminate demultiplexing, converting, and remultiplexing as separate steps. Instead, you could simply export your edited file from MPEG-VCR as a .mpg, import directly into MPEG Streamclip for conversion, and get another .mpg as the output. MPEG Streamclip doesn't re-encode MPEG-2 video to output MPEG-2 video, so you don't have to worry about that happening.

I tried it with a .mpg clip exported from VideoReDo, and listened to the converted file. (I didn't have clip available that came from MPEG-VCR.) The resulting audio sounded fine, but I am not an audio expert. It is possible there are better audio converters than the one MPEG Streamclip uses, but I don't know if the difference in quality is enough to make it worthwhile to demultiplex, convert, and remultiplex.

The version of MPEG-VCR that I have doesn't provide the option to convert AC3 to MP2 audio during export. If the OP's does, he should use that instead.

I may be losing it here, but where did you find an option in MPEG-VCR to convert the audio output from AC3 to mp2 during export?

I'm using version 3.14.7.6 which is in theory the newest.

Which version has that feature? Was it done away with?

MPEG Video Wizard looks interesting however it cost $99.

I guess since I have 2 computers that would yield as much 2 months of use as a trial.

    Thanks for the Streamclip tip!

Easy and fast. Great starting point.

I will try some of the others too.

Looking forward to hearing how MPEG-VCR will do the job without all of the extra steps.

  16. you could use avidemux to convert the audio

    video=>copy
audio=> mp2 (enter the bitrate you want in the options)
    format=> mpeg-PS

press save with extension (e.g. "myvideo.mpeg") , then do the edits on that exported file with mpeg vcr which you already have

You could do the edits and everything in avidemux, but the cuts have to be on keyframes. mpeg vcr or video wizard is a better option for editing

This video clip has AC3 audio. It will have MPEG audio after selecting MPEG and pressing OK.

For the MPEG-VCR experts I have a question which stumps me.

There's a segment in the middle of a clip that I want to axe.

I then select the mark in and the mark out points of that particular section.

What series of steps/tools retains everything else and cuts out that part?

If someone would be so kind to explain that to me it would really be useful and appreciated.

So far extra material is getting deleted that I still want to keep.

    Thanks!
