I don't know which is best for recording TV programs, +R or -R. No computer involved.
Recording is from TV cable to Toshiba DR570KU DVD recorder.
If someone can tell me where to research this, or offer info on differences and uses, it would be appreciated.
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

DVD-R.....because the majority of Taiyo Yuden blanks out there for sale are DVD-R.

Normally it doesn't matter. However...
1) Whatever you use you should only use good quality discs, which in the USA means either Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim (anything EXCEPT their Life series which Best Buy and other brick and mortar stores sell). Be prepared to buy your discs online from Rima.com (see hech54's link) or a similar online vendor as in the USA even in large cities it can be almost impossible to find good discs in brick and mortar stores. The market demands cheap crap as the vast majority of consumers want the cheapest price possible, caring little if the discs actually will work or not (it's really true).
2) Some Toshiba DVD recorders could only record to DVD-R discs but could play + or - discs. Your manual should tell you if your player only records to - media. -

Whatever your standalone will use, + or - and everything else jman98 said.
Also, as already stated, some standalones only use 1 type, as my panasonic will only record to -R and will only play -R dvdr's (except under certain circumstances it will play +R's) there were/are some that only use +R, other than that good media is all that is really an issue.
Verbatim or TY.
I usually get a 100 count spindle of verbatim from newegg when they have them on sale for between 18.00 & 20.00 with free shipping. -

I use only DVD+R because they are more compatible with my older DVD players.
