I have a lot of discs with TV shows as avi files I want to play on my DVP5990 (firmware V31). I burned them before I got the player using regular DVD+Rs and Windows "Burn data disc" drag and drop. Sessions are closed on all of them.
I always get "Unknown disc" when I put them in the player.

I've tried renaming as .divx and checked the files against the list at https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/290800-My-DivX-DVD-Player-can-t-play-my-avi-DivX-xvid-video with GSpot. There are no violations (bit rate, file size, resolution, etc), so I'm thinking that they should play.

Do I have to format the disc a certain way before I burn avi files and/or is there something else I should do?

The only reason I bought the player is so I can watch all these piled up discs without having to sit at the computer.

  3. It may be a ISO vs UDF file system problem. I forget which the 5990 wants. Try both with ImgBurn.

How about just waiting for the DVD to be released?

Can't you just play those off a thumb drive? Xvid avis should play fine on the Philips. Or else time for a cheap multimedia player that plays everything. Since getting my WDTV Live a couple months back (pawn shop buy for $50) I haven't used the Philips for anything. The media player plays everything I have tried on it (DVD ISOs, DivX, Xvid, MKV, etc.).

Once gain, that means it doesn't recognize the disc format. It has nothing to do with the properties of the files themselves. The player hasn't even seen the files yet.

I have some old DVDs burned with the UDF file system. The DVP5990 has no problems with those. ImgBurn recommends ISO+Joilet for Divx DVD players. That appears to work too.
