I have had no success with displaying output from my oldish Yamakawa DVD-380 player on my brand new Philips 40-in LED TV (model 40PFL6605H) over HDMI.

The TV set insists that there is "no video signal" on the relevant HDMI port. According to the manual of the DVD player, all ports are active simultaneously and do not need to be turned on. The HDMI, DVI and VGA ports should not be used simultaneously. I tried all available digital video OUT resolutions.

With a SCART cable I manage to get an analog picture on port EXT1.

At the time I bought the DVD player, it was noted as not using HDCP over digital video. This was supposed to be a Good Thing (R). Up to now I had used the DVD player with a computer monitor over a DVI -> DVI cable. Could the lack of HDCP support be the problem? Additionally, at the time it came out the DVD player was noted for not working with all brands/models of flat screen TVs over HDMI, but no details were given.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have on getting this to work.

    Regards, Couscous

If you have more than one HDMI connector on the tv try another.

I recently acquired a Sony and had a similar issue with one port but not another.

I've now done two more things:

    1. Upgraded the DVD player to the latest firmware version 2.81
    2. Tried all HDMI input ports on the TV
    ...without success.

    Regards, Couscous

Edit: Tomorrow I will check the HDMI cable by connecting a PC to the TV.

    One other thing.

If you already have a scart from the player to the tv, the HDMI will not work. Don't ask me why but it is one connection only.

This morning I tried DB83's last suggestion and disconnected the Scart cable before retrying the HDMI connection on all 4 HDMI ports -- no joy.

I also connected a computer via the HDMI cable and immediately got a nice image, so the cable is definitely ok.

So I guess the DVD player is the culprit. It doesn't matter much because I eventually want to move to a "home theater PC" instead of juggling with optical discs all the time.

    Thanks for all your help
    Couscous

Edit: In the meantime, Scart is suboptimal but acceptable.

You may need to look at the settngs of the dvd player and see what the output is set for the HDMI port. That needs to match the available sources for the tv - not all are created equally.

    So you may find HDMI settings for 576i, 576p, 720i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p.

Scart is sub-optimal but it is also standard definition or analogue.

Maybe your dvd player does not up-scale and the tv is expecting a quasi-HD signal as reported by the source. Even so, it should still receive 576i/p signals.

Tried that. The player has 3 settings for digital video: 576, 720p and 1080i. None of them work.

I should also mention that last night I updated the DVD player BIOS to the (most recent?) version 2.81. This added a menu item in the setup about "Digital". I suppose it means digital audio because the available options are line and RF.

    Cheers

A quote from the manual of your tv:

" If the TV does not recognize the HDMI
device and no picture is displayed, try
switching the source from one device
to another and back again. "
