Ok so I'm trying to convert an .mkv into .mp4. But I can't good enough settings to satisfy myself. Either the encoding takes too long, the quality is bad, or the file output is too big. Is there a balanced setting that I can use? The video is in 480p.

    Thanks

Please give more info. Detailed source details. Why do you need to convert?

But try use constant quality encoding mode and convert to h264 video and aac audio.

If the video is H264 and the audio AAC you can just set audio and video to Copy in Xvid4PSP, and output a mp4 in a couple of minutes without encoding. You should only re-encode if you have to change something fundamental in the original encoding.

  4. Start with "x264 Q18 Fast", but go to the codec details and change the Preset to Very Fast. If that's still too large change the Quality (CRF) to a higher value like 21. With the Very Fast preset x264 encodes DVD video about 2.5x realtime (ie, a 120 minute movie in less than an hour) on my dual core Celeron. About twice that fast on my quad core Q6600.
