MP4 clips import okay, but stall in the preview. They play about 1 second, that's it.
The film clips were captured on a flip movie camera (by someone else) and given to me to edit.
    I'm very new at this.
Have reviewed the adobe site for help, but still no luck.
Any references to help guide me through will be appreciated.

    Maybe install perian.

If it wont work try reconvert to another easier editable format with avidemux.

"import okay" - Were they transcoded during the import into something else?

Do the clips play okay in QuickTime player? If so, then Baldrick is correct about converting them. Check if Premiere supports AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec); if so, use MPEG Streamclip to convert the MP4s into AICs. The resulting files will be very large but the compression will have been removed and editing should be fairly easy thereafter.

BTW: MPEG Streamclip can also do rudimentary editing (cutting out pieces of the clips you don't want and then joining them all together) without the AIC conversion.
