I am not incredibly computer savvy, but I can do some things, so please don't get too technical with answers, but I can try to work through some technical stuff.
I was recording my daughter's 1st birthday party with my HTC Evo 4g, and the phone shut off during the recording. When I rebooted the phone, the file shows up on the phone, but won't play. When I uploaded it to my computer, it shows as a normal 3gp file that will play in QuickTime, just like the other videos, named VIDEO0217.3gp, but when I try to open the file I get the error message "Error - 2048: Couldn't open the file VIDEO0217.3gp because it is not a file type QuickTime understands."
When I look at the video properties it is named "VIDEO0217.3gp" Type is "3GPP Movie" and size is 29.5 MB, so I know something is there, I just can't get to it.
I really want this video, as it is my daughter's 1st birthday party, but I can't get to it. I have a Dell desktop using Windows Vista. Is there a way to play the file? And how? Thanks a lot to anyone who can help.

I did a Google search on "3gp file repair" (without the quotes) and was presented with numerous software repair options.
One link also suggested seeing if your file will play in VLC.
Please let us know what worked for you. I have an EVO, and might face the problem one of these days, too. -
If you get desparate upload the file somwehere, post a link to it and I'll take a look at it.
-
In situations like this, the file is usually gone.

because the cell phone rebooted during the video record..... the file didn't get a chance to
close and save properly.... what you wind up with is a fragmented video file and doesn't
have the proper header and footer saved on the file..
most of the time.. the file is now garbage.... -
Thanks for the tips. Is there a way to adjust the header and/or footer? I read something on another forum about a hex editor? I uploaded the file to mediafire. It is at http://www.mediafire.com/?a50ac5v8ar88zi8. Here is also what I have tried so far:
**AVS Video Editor : File Format Error
**AVCHD Video Converter: Runs, but creates smaller file that won’t play
**Format Factory: Failed to Decode
**Tried Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery: just finds old deleted files, doesn’t fix
**Used All Media Fixer and it “fixed” the file, but the file still won’t play and shows up exactly the same just with “fixed” as a prefix to the file name
** Virtual Dub: File is of an unknown or unsupported file type
**VLC Player and Media Player Classic won’t play
** Tried GOM Player: It said Cannot play media file, you don’t have the necessary codec to play, I tried their “Find Codec” feature which didn’t work, it said file may be damaged or fake. Then it gave me the following binary info:

I have been looking at other forums, and I have been trying things on this thread:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18159087
but I haven’t tried a hex editor, as I don’t know how.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. -
It seems to have a missing header. I have looked at the file in an hex editor, usually the top line(s) contains either "ftyp3g2" for 3GPP2 "ftyp3gp" for 3GPP and I have found evidence of 154 keyframes, but yet have no other indication of even the existance of any images. It might help if you upload an undamaged video made from the same camera and memory card. There can be no promises of success as this is not an exact science. The idea here is to try an borrow a functioning index.

Thanks a lot for the help. I uploaded another video from the same phone. It is VIDEO0003.3gp at

Thanks again for the help. I appreciate it. -
Hello, the mediainfo for your supplied "good" file is as posted below, but this does
not match the mediainfo you posted above. Which one reflects the specification of the "bad" file ?

Sorry for the confusion. The original file I posted media info about that was working was from a different phone, and I didn't realize it, until lowellriggsiam asked me to post a file from the same phone. So the "good" file that I have provided a link to is the correct good file, and you have now posted the correct media info for it. The media info that I supplied that had the file name C:\Users\X\Desktop\Extra Vids\2-22-11 sideways X piano.3gp was from a different phone, so the media info may not match the file type for the file that isn't working. The media info I posted for the file that isn't working:
General
CompleteName : C:\Users\X\Desktop\VIDEO0217.3gp
FileSize/String : 29.6 MiB
is correct for the file that won't work. I am reposting the media info that you posted for the "good" or working file that you posted so it is all in one post.

Sorry all for the confusion. And thanks again for the help. -
See this thread. There is a tool mentioned that some have had success with. He offers a download
that will repair 1/2 the video for free, so you can see if it works. I took the liberty of trying it with your
files. It produced a video that plays, but the picture is garbled. On the website, he invites communication
if you think your video could be fixable but the program is not currently working properly on it.
Try to contact this site and see what happens. Please let us know how you got on.

Thanks for the lead davexnet. I tried it too and it was all garbled with the file I uploaded on Media Fire, but when I uploaded directly from my cell phone, it fixed the picture, but it was kind of bumpy and in slow mo. Also there was no audio, so I don't know if this will fix it. I will contact the developer and see what happens.
I also directly uploaded the files from my phone to Media Fire to see if that would help anyone instead of the files I originally uploaded that I first put on my computer.
Working test file: http://www.mediafire.com/?1h6x1dt4x1g9ugi
Broken file: http://www.mediafire.com/?l23tjwmf0myh60a
Thanks again all for the help. -
video_object_start doesn't appear in the file when manually replacing the header it suddenly believes the file is a multitrack.
