I have installed Handbrake, but I can't get it to run. When I click on the icon, I get a window telling me that my display is only 853x683 and needs to be 1024x620 or higher. My screen resolution is set at 1280x1024. What do I need to do to get the program to run?

  2. Probably you have Mac version... with this edition you can't upscale... while Windows version can (but has others disadvantages).
Do you have any particular reason for using Handbrake instead of others?
You can solve this issue in different ways...

I just checked and I installed the Windows version. I am using it to convert videos to put on my cell phone. Handbrake was recommended for the conversion. What else would you recommend?

  4. You're right... last version removed that option... (upscaling).

I think you got confused by the word "display". That is actually referred to the size your video will be displaied on your monitor.
So my advice is to choose a resolution expressed in squared pixel..

In handbrake Picture option do like this:
    1) Check eventually crop options... automatic/custom... crop if you need, otherwise set custom 0/0/0/0
    2) Set Anamorphic LOOSE and Modulus 16
    3) Work on the width, keep in mind that there's no need of upscale.

Let's say you have a 16:9 video... you will set something 768x432 848x480 1024x576 1280x720 (with no need of upscaling)
in case of a 4:3 source go for 640x480 768x576 1024x768 and so on...

    All clear?

I guess you are using latest version? You could ask/report the bug in https://forum.handbrake.fr/viewforum.php?f=23 .

Or else use Xmedia Recode. It has also profiles for lots of cell phones.

That's OK, Elmuz, I do the same thing. Thank you both for your replies. I'll try Xmedia Recode when I get home.

All is not lost. At least you explained what this stuff about "display" really meant. Prior to your post I was completely baffled as to why Handbrake would possibly care about the display size of the monitor where it was running.
