I am ripping my blu rays with MakeMKV.
I want the lossless hd audio since these will primarily be used on my HTPC that has a HD audio capable receiver hooked to it.

But there may be times when the movies will be played in another room with a receiver that only does Dolby Digital or DTS for example.
What happens if I only rip the HD audio... how does this affect the receiver that cannot decode it?

Can I get away with just the HD or do I need to rip multiple audio tracks?

Depends on what the other room player is. Will you be using an extender or some media tank like popcorn hour?

I believe both those are capable of transcoding (pulling the core AC3 or DTS) track and outputting them to the TV or AMP. It's best to check the specific players capability in regards to HD Audio.
